Title: What's happened to the forum?
Post by: roseway on August 28, 2006, 07:42:19 AM
Has something gone funny with the forum, or is it just me? When I arrived this morning I had to log on, although my logon was supposed to be forever, and every section was showing as unread. The appearance has changed too.

I couldn't log on at 0330 this morning, so I assumed the minx was up & about doing something! I believe this is the new forum format wot I was priviledged to a sneak preview of a couple of weeks ago.

It's very nice Kitz, but I'm a bit worried about the kiss emoticon, I'm scared Roseway is going keep puckering up to me. The very thought of it's putting me off me breakfast; got to go...

Sorry guys I shoulda given you some warning, but it was one of those things that I decided for some obscure reason to start late at night when I thought it would be quiet, then ended up taking longer than expected when I ran into a snag during conversion of the existing forums.

By the time I got things working again I was falling asleep.

Theres still a few minor settings I need to change such as put more/different smilies in... and a couple more mods.
But at least the hard stuff has been done and I managed to get there in the end, after a few minor hiccups

Theres a lot more features in the SMF software..  and there were a couple of things that I found restrictive in the phpbb software after having used SMF on another forum.  If you have a look around the options (and once you get used to them).

Im also hoping the new forum will deter some of the spam bots Ive been getting of late (got sick of deleting them) since the phpbb captcha has been cracked.

A heads up of some of the preferances you may need to check.

I had a hiccup with the avs and resizing during conversion, but I think Ive managed to fix this for most of the avs that Ive checked so far.

Check that your forum time is correct, as it may need to be set to BST.

Modify Profile >> Look and Layout Preferences >> Time Offset.

Also whilst in there perhaps look at checking "return to topics after posting by default" and "show most recent PMs at the top"...  some of you may be interested in the "quick reply" option too.

From the PM Options, you may also want to set "save a copy of sent PMs by default" and show a popup when you recieve new pms..
Although Ive put a mod in that should flash in the top panel and display when you get a new pm.

I tried to upload an avatar but got this response: "The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."

I don't know, I go for a day out to California, then when I come back everything has changed!

Now is it my imagination or are we now running back-wards (newest post at the top)?
now let me see what these extra buttons doooo (oops) sorry.

In "Addition Options"
I see "Notify me of replies" is NOT set by default. Would this not be better set as a YES default ???

Kitz, what does the Message icon box do, I have tried selecting various option but nothing seems to do anything.

I changed everything just so I could confuse you OF ;)

>>> Now is it my imagination or are we now running back-wards (newest post at the top)?

ermmm nope...  shouldnt be...  have you changed something in your config?

>>  see "Notify me of replies" is NOT set by default

I think thats the same on most forums...  saves the server generating lots of unwanted mails.
You can change your prefs from
Modify profile >>
Notifications and email >>

Theres several options in there... change it to what you want. :)

>> what does the Message icon box do,

Which message icon OF..
ahhh after looking around for a while could it be the message icon when posting a reply?

If it is..  its the little icon at the top of the message reply..  it looks like you changed yours to a thumbs down...  and Ive just changed this one to a lightbulb.

you succeeded

Message icon: Found it. :-X

Earlier, on my main PC the posts were definately reversed, with the latest post at the top. I am now using my laptop and the posts are as normal, and no, I never changed anything in my profile etc.
Will go back and log on again on my other PC and see if it's still the same.

Kitz,

I?m impressed,  :) SMF is a big a big improvement on php BB, well done I can see you?ve worked hard on it.

Now all I got to do is get used to the layout.   ;D

High 5 for Kitz..

:-[Just remembered, I did change it in my settings, I thought it referred to the list of threads. ie, Whereas "Down the pub" is to-wards the bottom of the list, I thought if there had been a reply it would have been taken to the top of the list (obviously wrong "again")

But still a very good option that I think I may well use.
Sorry but I also forgot to mention "excelent work and thanks"

Thanks stan..  took me a while to actually get around to doing the transformation as Id spent ages trying to build a scheme I was happy with, yet still in line with the old forum style.

SMF is much better once you get used to it.
Word of warning though..  I know you have a phpbb forum.

This version RC3 was only released last week and although the actual build of the forum software itself is pretty good ....

There isnt a proper converter yet for phpbb >> SMF RC3.. thats been released.
Well there is one, but its full of bugs.. so unless you want to spend hours pouring over the php config and mysql data like I did.. then dont bother until theyve ironed out all the bugs in the forum converter.

>>>  any chance of an icon for it?

For creating a quote (similar to the icons for Bold, Italic etc) only it saves having to type the code each time if only wanting to quote part of the subject. "[ quote] nice work [ /quote]" (altered so it did not show as a quote).

you mean like this one

Its above the smilies ... 2nd row, next to last button

or alternatively you can simply click the quote button above the poster when it will quote the full post for you

Thanks, I missed that one.

Now, as for font, when I click the font icon, am I supposed to re-type the 10pt, to the size required,
only it always says 10pt?
(ps) must remember not to press F5 whilest looking at preview, because I just lost my last message. :-X

heh - you'll soon learn not to ;)

Kitz, this looks brilliant :) You've obviously done a lot of work on this, and it's certainly paid off. Definitely a very refreshing change from PHPBB. Well done you :)

Here's to (hopefully) no spam bots anymore!!

Looking good kitz  :D

SMF looks very nice and i can imagine you had lots of fun migrating the forum in the early hours  ???

The one thing which I would say I dont like is how everything now appears as unread! But i'm not making a fuss as I can imagine that was one of the few trade offs in moving to this new super-duper, secure, feature packed, flashy design.

Nice one  ;)

talking of which glad you like the smilies..   I couldnt actually find a pack that I liked..
So I put together some that were up my emotes site that had a similar style or look about them.

They actually came out a bit bigger than I thought they would when on the forum.... but I may add some more when I get chance.

and (touch wood) not one spammer .

On the old forum there was at least one a day..
and several times I had to delete batches of about 6-8 despite installing a captcha.

btw chris....

dunno if you saw my post here (http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=103.msg3368#msg3368) and have any suggestions.

apparently its the lil blue *new* post icon that isnt always showing on new posts..
I actually saw it happen for the last night too.. after astral mentioned it.
But strangely, it was working on some of the threads but not one (which iirc was the 2 words association thread)

As you know I very slightly modified a "mod" to get it to do what it does now, since by default it only shows up on the thread view and not on individual posts.

I caught colin last night breifly on msn and asked him about colour highlighting new posts, but he was rather vague as he couldnt remember which mods hed applied.. as he hasnt even got around to updating to RC3 yet..  though when I probed further, he said hed written that particular mod himself.
However one thing that he did say is that the highlighting was also buggy.

Since it seems to work some/most of the time..  could it be cookie/cache related?...  or sql related by not recording read posts?
or just the forum software being silly.

Not sure if theres anything I can do about this..  any suggestions/ideas  please?

Hmm, how can I get out of this without offending everybody?

I put Astral first, cuz his name is alphabetically first.. as the song says: start at the very beginning, a very good place to start....
Roseway comes alphabetically after Astral...

Ok, a sensible answer in response to your question Kitz...

Basically I don't know. I've never actually seen it happen, so I'm not entirely sure why it would happen, if you know what I mean.

I'll keep a closer eye out, but if it's an intermittent problem related to tagging read posts etc, perhaps it will be fixed in 1.1 final?

Nothing.
As we are but mortals treading the soil of the moon, palpating its pebbles, tasting the panic and splendor of the event, feeling in the pit of one's stomach the separation from terra... these forums offer the most romantic sensation an explorer has ever known... this is the only thing I can say about the matter.
