Title: Chrome and downloading without saving?
Post by: renluop on May 11, 2012, 07:55:21 PM
It's no problem to download via Chrome if one wishes to save the items, but I cannot find an option to download and open to view without saving the file. PDFs are one source of the problem: I use PDF File Exchange viewer.

This isnt going to help you, but I dont seem to have any problems and the chrome pdf viewer works ok here.
On the very odd occasion I may get a message saying parts of the document couldnt be displayed may be missing but would I like to view in Adobe Reader, but even that will still open without me having to download and save the document.

Ive had a look on the chrome help site and can only find this on the internal pdf viewer, which again doesnt solve your particular answer
http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1060734

so Ive had a poke around under the hood in chrome to see perhaps where it could be that stopping yours and Ive found the following settings which may be affecting things and perhaps compare any setting differences.

From the spanner icon top right
>> Settings
>> LH Menu "Under the Hood"
>> Privacy Section
>> Click the Content settings tab

New window opens
>> Scroll down to "Plug-ins" section
I have this setting as "Run automatically"

-----------

Check your chrome plugins  - use about:plugins in the nav bar

Check that Chrome PDF Viewer isnt disabled

I notice in mine I also have the Adobe PDF Plugin for Firefox

Also just found this

http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/aXJX_9jNsIM

again not entirely relevant to your own problem as you use PDF File exchange, but it has made me wonder if its possible that you installed the former before the latest version of chrome.
Reading between the lines in that particular thread it seems that chrome may not work properly if theres possibly an old outdated Adobe pdf viewer on your system.... which leads me to also wonder if chrome is recognising PDF file exchange (even so I'd still expect the default chrome viewer to work).. or if a setting in pdf exchange is confusing it. :(

Apologies for not coming back sooner, but had an enjoyable but tiring weekend in London to view the Games site with some grand-kids and parents. One who was involved in early survey work. And then yesterday to the Imperial War Museum.

Anyhow there was no trace of Chrome's reader nor of Adobe. Reinstalled Chrome, ensuring reader plugin set to allowed, and then PDF Exchange set to default. Both work OK.

Thanks for your help, Kitz.
