Title: Who's your ISP?

Who is your ISP?

ISP:- Plusnet
Account:- Premier 2Mb
How long :- Since April 2003
Monthly usage:- About 15GB has been my limit.. normally around 10GB
Previous ISP's:- U-net, lineone (now tiscali), X-Stream, BT Internet.

Monthly usage: Depends how much I download, and how much time I spend at home. Anywhere from 3GB to 15GB

ISP: Zen
Account: the home 20meg capped AdslMax one.
How long: <1 month
Monthly usage: 30gB down/50gB up, Browsing, BitTorrent.
I konw it doesn't add up but I am taking some away-holiday, probably go to their 50GB pack in August.

PRevious ISPs:

Eclipse: <7 days

PlusNet : 4 years+ ADSL, 3 years dial-up /ISDN/
            : 4 years ADSL ongoing at the "2nd home".

TeleWest Cable: 3 years +

Skynet.BE : 18 months ADSL over ISDN

XS4ALL(pronounced "access for all").NL ISDN/ADSL 2.5 years

Redhotant: dial-up for a short while

Compuserve: signed up when Ben was 8 and we were in Switzerland, he is 22 now. Only gave up the account in 1999.
I was 1000126.3075@compuserve.com.

Cix: before C'serve, signed up when Ben was 2(?)

ISP = Force9 - part of Plus Net

Account type = Bussiness Premier Up To 8mbps ( don't even get 3mbps and have an upload speed of 192kbps instead of 832kbps - Oh Yes :roll: !

You must be quite some distance from the exchange for your upstream to be affected that much?
Have you checked your internal wiring.. Although max is rate adaptive it shouldnt affect your upstream that much on 3Mb.

For reference purposes...

ISP: was Central Point - taken over by Fast24
Account: 512k Unlimited - RapidPlay 512k since takeover
How long: Since November 2004
Monthly usage: Unknown - family usage which varies, but alot of use
Previous ISP's: BT openworld dial-up
Notes: Service seems to be provided through Tiscali network. considering move to ADSL Max before year end.

I have been a PlusNet user since October 2002.  PlusNet gives very good service and excellent support.  The support people are diligent and helpful.

PlusNet ADSL has always been robust.  I have just now regraded to ADSL Max (9/9/06) and am delighted with the download speed increase from 512kb to 5MB (uploads up from 256kb to 448kb).  After half an hour of instability, the speed settled down - a few router reboots helped here.

PlusNet state that routers/modems should be reconnected frequently over the first ten days of the ADSL Max service.  The PlusNet advice link is

However, please also see this kitz forum link which, might on the face of it, seem to contradict PlusNet's advice

I believe that the two pieces of advice are mutually compatible but I thought I ought to mention it so that others can give it some thought.

I would not wish to use any other ISP than PlusNet.

There seem to be conflicting reports from BT regarding this too, which is probably where the confusion comes from!

Think about it - there have to be probably millions of modem users on Max, who don't stay synced 24/7, so presumably BT's systems are designed to be intelligent enough to cope with this.

I don't particularly like the use of the word "frequently" - this could be taken wrongly - if you reconnect too frequently, it will eventually lead to your SNR being increased or interleaving being applied (if it isn't already) because your line will appear to be unstable.

That's the advice PN gave to me and it certainly f ... er didn't do my connection any good.

I think this depends on what you want from your connection. Frequent re-syncs, whether you cause them deliberately or they happen as a result of line conditions, may well result in an increase in the noise margin target and/or interleaving, but that isn't necessarily bad. It will result in a more stable connection, and in my case that's what I wanted and have now achieved. I use a Speedtouch router now, and I've tweaked it with the DMT tool to increase the noise margin. Interleaving has been automatically applied, and that's good too as far as I'm concerned.

So it wouldn't be right to assume that the PN advice is wrong for everyone, but it needs to be qualified.

Account           -> Up to 8Mbps Free Broadband (also have line rental and call package = ~?20 per month)
Since               -> 12Sep06 Up to 8Mbps,
                            prior to that Feb06 1Mbps
                            prior to that Demon Dial Up (?10 per month)
Usage             -> Total (after 1 month of NetMetering) 2.083GB, of which 1.627GB (D) and 466.67MB (U)
Previous ISP's -> TalkTalk Dialup until Feb06
                            Demon Internet Services Dialup ?10 per month

And that's that.

Usage : Migated in at 512, upgraded to first 1mb then 2mb, and now MAX prepayed 4gb
Previous ISP's: Compuserve (9600 speeds, vast 'phone bill ! ), Frontier, BT, Pipex, BT, Freeserve, Virgin, PN and all being well Zen as from some time tonight.

Monthly usage:- Unlimted, actual usage 50 -100gig
Previous ISP's:- Freeserve back in the late 90s, Wanadont, Orange ( definetly dont ) and for a grand total of 2 weeks just before I moved to Bt business I was on BT total BB.

I get a lubbly 8 fiddy kb down and 370kb up  :P

for years btbroadband until asked politely to leave (eventually) due to frequent 100gb month downloading
for 1 year zen 2mb unlimited; did around 60-80gb / month. migrated recently because needed to save money
for 1 month f2s cascade plus. was ok for 2 weeks. having some problems recently so nowhere near cap atm.
