i want to upgrade from windows 7 32bit and want to get windows7 64bit i take it il have to format the drive ? ?

By formatting do you mean a "clean install", because the answer is "yes".
You can't "upgrade" from 32-bit to 64-bit.
So you'll need to back up your data and reinstate afterwards, plus reinstall all programs you need.
