Title: Windows Updates etc etc...
Post by: chrissie on February 08, 2012, 01:48:39 PM
Hope I'm posting this in the right section:

Hi

Had an issue with (HP G72)laptop this morning couldn't start windows but eventually did and then also summat happened to Norton's <spit> (AV, Firewall and Sonar protection switched off) but hopefully I've got that done now after a couple of hours of clicking this and that.  I know you don't like Norton's here but it came on the lappy and I have found it quite good...until today.

Couple of questions here if you can help me please.  With all this taking place there are some alerts on "solve PC issues" on the task bar.  It recommends making Windows Updates automatic which it isn't atm as I turned it to "ask" but don't think it does now.  So....should I put it to automatic and let it do what it wants?  Must admit I don't like it taking control and dowlnloading whatever it likes.  However I must admit I wouldn't have a clue what to accept or not.  It was taking ages to download and install at times so that's why I turned it off, now I'm not sure if it's updated at all since then.

Also another alert was this   :    NVIDIA Graphics Driver has stopped working properly.   To solve this problem, complete the steps in the order given. If one step doesn't solve the problem, then move on to the next one. It says this stopped working 1 times on 3/1/2012.   My question is, if it only stopped working once do I have to do anything, or is this anything to do with the Windows Updates?

My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium and have had no probs until today when it wouldn't start and then Norton's messed up.  Have done full scan with Norton's, Housecall and downloaded and scanned with Malwarebytes...no threats found thank goodness.

Thanks in advance for all your kind help.

First of all, one problem with some programs that come pre-installed (Norton for one) is that they are only trial versions and after a few weeks revert to cut-down free versions which do not necessarily auto-update.
So be careful and make sure you check either it is updating or you up-date on a regular basis.

Re Windows update, I to do not have it set for auto-update either simply because of the reason that it can slow down my PC at a time when I don't want it doing so or also that annoying message that says do not stop the install when you are trying to shut down the PC and therefore have to wait what seems a eternity before you can either shut down or open properly.
I prefer to update Windows manually then if it needs to re-start it will be at a time I am ready and waiting for it to do so.

As for the graphics problem, my only thought on that is if it has sorted itself, then there is not a lot you need to do, Ok I suppose you could check the driver to see if it needs updating, but that usually happens with Windows update anyway, providing you have not just selected the normal update.

(AV, Firewall and Sonar protection switched off)
Hopefully you have made sure these are now switched back on.

Thanks for the reply OF.  Norton's did come pre-installed but that was over a year ago and I downloaded and paid for the upgrade online when the trial ran out (was easier for me to do and it has been good since)  It updates itself regularly and I do scans et al so until yesterday no probs with it at all...nor slow computer with it.

Have to agree with you re the Windows update as to why I took it off auto...the trouble is I now don't know which to choose to download and I don't think I've downloaded many since then so I'm wondering if that is the problem that caused yesterday's blip.  I booted it up several times yesterday after I got it round to working properly and Norton's working well too after that.  Tonight, first time on lappy today and I got the black screen up AGAIN..sigh, saying windows can't start properly.  This time, instead of doing the recommended repair start I clicked on start windows normally and it came on fine no problem.

I'm now wondering if there's a glitch with start up though why today and not the several times yesterday...sigh...not that I know what to do if there is (computer idiot here) but if it comes up again to choose normal or repair start I will do the normal as it's been ok since I did tonight and no probs with Norton's either.  Wish I knew more but I don't but hopefully it won't happen again and I'll do the win updates tomorrow when I've got more time.  Blimming computers...I love 'em but not when they are playing silly beggars lol.

As you say with updates, which ones to chose etc, even myself I end up reading them then just install all of them, but when I want to.

Also very strange, today my XP system started playing up with loading taking forever, but like yourself after one or two re-starts it seemed to settle back down to normal, but I had been cleaning the system of so-called debris, so clean-up probably removed a file that was required, but fortunately it seems to have repaired itself.
