Title: Unreliable Router Chipset

Strange that Netgear is mentioned when most people here find it's the one that is most likely to hold it's connection in difficult circumstances.

I agree.  This subject was also mentioned here (http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,1015.0.html) today, and Ive seen several other people comment on other forums about whether this is the case or not.

My own personal opinion is that I'm not convinced and I think there is more to it than just the chipset.
Ive seen and heard too many routers with that particular chipset manage to get a line working when others wouldnt.  I wont even pretend to be an expert on the subject, but I'm sure there must be something more to this but what it is I honestly don't know.

Fair enough when it comes to the Zyxel - because I have seen them perform shall I say not the best on some long lines and it certainly wouldnt be my choice.  But as you say there has been just a few too many reports where the Netgear and a couple of other routers on that list has done the trick. 

That report seems to point the finger at all TI AR7 chips, my gut feeling is that its a combination of things. 
Its a well known fact that "pairing" the router chipset to the chipset in the dsalm can help some lines.
Its also well known that some versions of firmware on routers are better/more stable than others.
Its fairly well known that the "make" of the router as well as the chipset can also have an influence and that some manufacturers spend more time and £ on development than others.

The new dsl code for the chip has made it stable.
