Post by: UncleUB on May 31, 2009, 11:02:40 AM
I have just noticed that Newnet have gone over to supplying Billion Routers and Modems.

Has anyone got any info/or used one of these.

Yes, I've got a 5200G-R4, although I'm not using it at the moment. It's a perfectly decent router, and has some interesting geeky features for the adventurous, but you don't need to be a geek to use it. With the standard firmware at the time I bought mine, it had the strange characteristic that it overrode the target noise margin set in the exchange, and forced it to 6 dB. This was useful to me at the time, when my target noise margin had gone up to 15 dB as a result of a temporary problem. Later firmware removed this feature, and I expect current production models will have the newer firmware, but it can be flashed back to the older firmware.

I had a 5100 IIRC with my first ISP, still got it somewhere.

Nice little router, never let me down.

Billion have a UK site.

Solwise used to supply & support them, don`t think they do anymore though... A very decent company.

I have just had a reply from query about Billion routers from newnet support.

Good Afternoon Phil,

We have tested the billion stringently across a varying degree of factors and it has passed all of our tests.  Unfortunately we do not have the facility to test it on a long line, we can only gather this information from our customers, as and when we start getting feedback.  As we have just started to send these routers to our customers we do not have this information at the moment, however we feel that this router performed very well under testing and would not couple it with out adsl unless we were happy that it would perform.

Kind regards

It seems an honest comment especially this bit.

Yes, I think that Newnet are honest. I'm obliged to say though that you can buy the 5200G for a lot less than their price (particularly when you take shipping into account), for example http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=2392 .
