Title: Zyxel VMG8623-T50B ROM-D Upload
Post by: dtech on October 20, 2021, 12:22:26 PM
Hello,

Has anyone gotten a "999 Illegal FW" message before when trying to upload a backup rom-d to their zyxel?
Or know why I'm getting one and how to fix it?

I've tried different things with no success so far:
- Turn off windows FW.
- login as admin/root/supervisor
- use Filezilla (passive mode), windows ftp and ssh (putty)

I've made no manual changes to the .rom file so it's not an issue of it being corrupted (obtained the .rom by pressing the Backup button on Rom-D tab of gui).

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Has anyone got a known good ROM-D file that could be used as a temporary test?

And welcome, Dtech !

Thanks for the welcome Weaver.

I've just tried with a rom I've got from Zyxel directly and got the same error.
Good idea to try a different rom though.

Edit: The above was via windows FTP (cmd line, FTP), for good measure I tried FileZilla forcing passive mode and got the same error.

Burakkucat might have some insight here. He’ll probably be along later.

Assume you have tried to reload it via the GUI because if that fails it sounds like a bug that Zyxel need to address.
The backup file that my VMG8924.B10A  produces has a .conf extension and I wonder if it's expecting that?

I felt the tweak of my tail!  ;)

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the VMG8623-T50B. (Is that one of the ZyXEL range which use a MediaTek SoC rather than Broadcom?  :-\ )

Unfortunately for the Rom there's no upload button in the gui.
There's upload button in the gui for firmware, wwan, and config.

Ah what a shame, I'm making some progress I think.
My googling seem to point to an issue with windows FTP not supporting passive mode, so through an Ubuntu terminal repeating the same process is now giving me Permission denied.
It's not clear whether I don't have permission to access the local file or the "remote" fw/rom-d.

I'll keep y'all posted if I figure it out.
Cheers

Yep Mediatek SoC, actually it is a twin brother of my VMG3625-T50B but with VOIP support.

Thank you.

This is interesting as I'm not aware that my Zyxel devices have a ROM-D backup ability in the GUI, only the user config backup.
Could you add a screenshot of the GUI screen that you got the backup from please.
 :)

The Rom-D Backup on the GUI only shows up when logging in with supervisor/root password. Or maybe your model/gui is different?
Screenshot attached.

Edit: Back to square one. File permission sorted, FTP on passive mode (ubuntu term), upload the file "999 Illegal FW" message.

This hidden UI feature confused me in the past.

SSH or telnet, zycli fwid check off, zycli model check off, try now

Thank you all.

I think I was being a numpty..

Both the output from the "Backup/Restore" Backup button and the Rom-D, "Backup Rom-D" are .json files.
So it seems the Restore config button on the "Backup/Restore" page accepts both the Backup and Rom-D files as an upload.

But well done for discovering that - far from obvious, IMHO.
