Title: Difference between IP bridged and PPPoE bridged on HG612

Could someone please explain the difference between PPPoE bridged and IP bridged settings on the Huawei HG612.

I find some bits saying I should use one over the other, but what's the difference?

I understand bridged mode in general and NAT - but in both cases the router would do the PPPoE authentication and NAT wouldn't it?

I can't remember if those options are related but the HG612 in theory has half-bridge support, where it establishes the PPPoE connection then spoofs the IP over DHCP to the router.  I don't think any of us ever got it to work however.

Without getting a HG612 out of "the grotto" and checking, I have a vague recollection that the second mode mentioned, "IP bridged" is actually IPoE mode.  :-\

So they are PPPoE and IPoE modes . . . for use as Alex has described.

Welcome to the form.

In PPPoE bridged mode the modem is just a modem and knows nothing about IP; it just sends PPP PDUs and doesn’t care what is in them, could be IPv6 or IPv4 or some other protocol entirely. So it won’t do NAT as that is only for units that are expecting and know about IP. If you are using NAT (I don’t btw), then NAT is something handled by your router, in a two box setup; router and modem.
