Title: Vodafone Supported Router
Post by: syfer on September 26, 2017, 03:22:08 PM
Hi so I am think of going with vodafone and after a live chat talk I found out that "These 3 brands of the router will support Vodafone Fibre Network, : Broadcom , Lantiq , Triductor" So I want to know which one is best to use and which make and model should I have a look at?
I have 3 computers, 4 smartphones and 4 tablets.
I need help and I don't have the money to buy a new high-end router so whats the router to get from vodafone?

Sorry, that's nonsense as the modem chipset doesn't connect to Vodaphone, it connects to your street cabinet.

I see so what router should I get then that comes with the plan? Which one should I ask them to include?

Do they offer more than 1? I thought you got the 1 they supply.

I'm pretty sure you and/or me are getting confused here. If you sign up with Vodafone they will send you a router to use. However, there have been reports that their router doesn't work very well, so you may want to use a router you have bought yourself.

To do this you will need your logon credentials that Vodafone have assigned to you. However, Vodafone in the recent past were reluctant to give you these. They have recently softened their stance and are prepared to give your credentials as long as you are planning to use a router approved by Openreach appearing on the Openreach MCT list.

I think the person you spoke to was explaining the modem chipset you should ensure is in the 3rd party router you plan to use if you don't want to use the Vodafone router.

And here's a link to the BT Openreach Modem Conformance Test (MCT) (http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/MCT.htm) page on this forum. I, and seemingly my phone line, favor Broadcom modems, especially as it's far easier to keep an eye on what the line is doing via excellent tools such as MyDSLWebStats (https://www.mydslwebstats.co.uk/).

I managed to pick up a ZyXel VMG8924-B10A for £30 including postage on an auction site recently and it's working very well for my line.

Hi ok, I am bit confused in BT Openreach Modem Conformance Test (MCT). I have this router http://uk.tp-link.com/products/details/?categoryid=&model=Archer+D2
So can I use my current router?
If not what do you think I should do?
I don't want to fork out a lot of cash for new router is there any way to use my existing one?

That router has an ADSL modem which will not work on a Vodafone fibre VDSL2 connection. To use that router instead of the supplied Vodafone router, you will need to use a VDSL modem as well.

As @dray says, you'll need a VDSL modem to use for Vodafone fibre. One option is to look for an Huawei HG612 3B (Openreach) modem on ebay. You should be able to find them for around £20. Then connect the Huawei modem to the broadband and connect the WAN port of the TP-Link router to the Huawei.

You can use Vodafones provided modem. If you have a look through this section of the forum there have been many complaints about the device they supply.

The Zyxel devices listed on the MCT page are well recommended on these forums. You can pick them up for around £30 on EBay if that's within your budget.

I think then I can afford to spend 100 pounds on a new router as I want one that works with them so which one from broadbandbuyer.com should I look at? I am high internet user lol. I don't want to deal with WAN port of the TP-Link router to the Huawei. Sounds very confusing to me. Maybe best to buy decent router.

This one might be worth a bid nearer the end of the auction in a couple of hours.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292269779693

You could use it in modem only mode and retain your existing router as it has better AC wi-fi, that is if you don't mind having a two box solution, instead of just one. Or use it as your modem router for a one box solution.

PS. It's not hard to setup via WAN port, lots of people do it. Why spend hundred pounds when you don't have?

Is your preference for a 'single box' solution? If you don't mind having two devices, then I think your best option is to get a Broadcom based modem such as the ZyXel from eBay and use your existing router. It's low cost and used by many, so proven.

Hi yes, I would prefer for a single box solution. As my router is upstairs and landline is downstairs. I am going t cancel my second phone line. If I was to buy ZyXel from eBay how would this be set up as my router is in another room and landline in the downstairs hall?

If you propose to have the ZyXEL device, as the modem, in the downstairs hall and the router in an upstairs room then you would need to run an Ethernet cable from the ZyXEL (the modem), downstairs, to the router, upstairs.

Yes, I thought at much this why I wanted an all in one device. Back to drawing board. What all in the router you suggest I look at?

Perhaps I should point out that to get this router to work on Vodafone, you will need your connection userid and password. Vodafone will only provide this information if you state that the router you will use is one on the BT approved list.  I got a 2nd hand Zyxel VMG8924-B10A from ebay. Works fine, has five ethernet ports, and is on the BT approved list: https://uno.help/knowledge-base/article/openreach-approved-vdsl-modems (https://uno.help/knowledge-base/article/openreach-approved-vdsl-modems)

The Zyxel VMG8924-B10A is excellent. It's an older model now, with its replacement just being released.

The Zyxel VMG8823-B10B
https://www.zyxel.com/uk/en/products_services/Dual-Band-Wireless-AC-N-VDSL2-VoIP-Combo-WAN-IAD-VMG8823-B-Series/

The VMG8823-B50B is basically the same device but also supports VPlus/profile 35b (we don't use that in the UK) so might cost a little more.

I would anticipate that Zyxel will submit this device to the OpenReach MCT, if they haven't already.

Can some tell me Technicolor TG789Vac v2 and Technicolor TG589vac v2. What the difference?
How good is Zyxel VMG8924-B10A wireless as I have so many wireless devices with the extender?

I'd get the Zyxel as previously stated. It's available within your budget and there's plenty of support from people on this forum as they've either got one or had one (I've got one).

The only downside I find with the Zyxel is that the user interface can be a bit slow at times, but liveable with.

I've got 2 Zyxels, one as the main unit downstairs and the other upstairs in my office linked together via homeplugs (it works for me).

I own a Fritzbox 3490 and it's very good. However it uses the Lantiq chipset which means no dsl stats and very limited stats via gui interface.
As you had put a nominal value of £100 pounds, is why I put the TP Link VR400 forward.
This uses the Broadcom BCM63168 chipset and has wireless AC, and is a combined modem router with Gigabit ethernet ports, and only costs £78ish pounds, from Broadband buyer.

The router you use doesn't have to be on the approved link, you just have to say you are using an approved one to get your username and password from Vodafone
