Title: Billion 8800NL R2 vs ZyXEL VMG8924 vs fritzbox 7490 vs HG612
Post by: AngryMonkey on August 18, 2016, 01:41:05 PM
Hi,
It's been recommended I ditch my Asus DSL-ac68u due to some dodgy line stats with VDSL BT Infinity and replace with a more stable modem (ideally one which the various stats programmes such as DSLStats etc work with).

Suggestions appear to be
- Billion 8800NL R2
- ZyXEL VMG8924
- fritzbox 7490
- Huawei Echolife HG612

Questions:
1. Is there any clear recommendations on which one to get, or are all the above "good"?
2. I want to run constant stats from a 24/7 PC, so do any of them offer more stats/advanced VDSL tweaks than others?

Thanks,
AM.

depending on your cab type and whether you want separate modem and router or all in one.. - do you know what cab type you are on? - if its a eci I would avoid the billion. I use a zyxel 8324 in bridge mode and this works fine for stats along and seems happy with my router on my eci. I have used the 8924, whilst good it gave me missing minutes on the stats. Some of the others on here who use it had no issues but that is why I went for the 8324 in bridge mode as we couldn't fix the missing minutes.

Find out your cab type then choose accordingly. If you are on huawei then you have plenty of options. Eci like me then its not so good.

see what the cab is  http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/cabinet-lookup.htm  and post back.

well stats wise billion, zyxel all in ones will work fine for your cab type etc..  could even use hg612 if you have your own router..

8324 (2.4ghz),8924 (5ghz), (they will work bridge mode with your own router or as all in one)
8800nl (not so keen on the release 2 prefer version 1 myself) - again will work bridge mode or as all in one
not used fritz so can't comment
hg612 unlocked + router of your choice

still depends whether you want 2 or 1 box solution..

Multiple box solution, so just the VDSL modem required, I already have Wifi all setup.

My setup is that the cable comes direct from the top of pole, into the loft straight into the back of the modem (no faceplate etc or phone connected), and the modem is used just for VDSL (it then has cat 6 out to a central switch with several WiFi access points around the property.

So for just the modem it looks like the 8800nl is a good choice, simple solution, has stats, decent ratings on here... but actually any of them would be ok?

personally I would stick with Zyxel over the billion but for your cab billion should be ok.

If you have sorted your wifi and just needed the all in one (modem/router mode - ) and not bothered with its internal wifi then the 8324 if you can find one should be good. Just disable the wifi. 8800nl release 1 or 2 will do the same. Some of 8800nl r2 users on here did not rate it that highly - http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,18126.0.html

I liked the R1 but it did not like my eci cab..

ZyXEL VMG8924 should give highest sync.

I saw same sync speeds on the 8324 and the 8924. I don't think he needs wifi from the all in one so might save money picking up and 8324 if poss - just a thought

If you are happy with two boxes you may want to consider the HG612 modem with the Asus DSL-ac68u router as a low cost and very reliable option.

As stated above, if it's just for a modem then there's no need to go for the ZyXEL 8924, the 8324 should do just fine. they are absolutely identical boxes apart from the addition of a 5ghz wifi card in the 8924. Obviously if you find them for the same price then why not get the 8924, but the 8324 should be cheaper.

The Huawei HG612 would also be a good option, as that is just a modem. There's no need to disable unwanted wifi features, no setting up to work in bridge mode. It's ready to go as soon as you flash the unlocked firmware, which is idiot proof. Make sure to get the newest model, which I believe to be the 3B. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here.

I have no idea about the Fritzbox as I have never owned 1. All the others you have mentioned are Broadcom chipsets, the same as Huawei cabinets. They all have access to the Broadcom CLI and pretty much identical stats. The ZyXEL will probably be the hardest to source at a decent price. Ebay being the only place I could find 1 at a reasonable price.

On my line the VMG8924 consistently syncs 2Mbps+ higher than the HG612.

If you're going to use Asus DSL-ac68u as a router, then just get a modem such as this http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,17575.0.html

I can certainly recommend the VMG8324 in bridge mode. That's what I'm using now (Huawei cabinet) and of the various options it gives me the best combination of speed and error rate. Details of how to connect and configure it here: http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/zyxel_VMG8324-B10A_bridge.htm

Great answers, thanks all!

I've ordered a the HG612 (3B), a VMG 8324 and a Billion 8800 (version 2 though, so hopes are not high). I'll test all 3 out vs the Asus and report back :)

Thanks,
Am

for most people the zyxel seems best, only me and less found the billion better for error rates.

Any of the 3 should be fine tho for stats collection and been compatible with openreach dslams, hg612, 8800nl and zyxel.

I would avoid the fritzbox.

Went live on PlusNet fibre yesterday. I was using the PlusNet One Hub (multipurpose) but picked up a second user ZyXel VMG8924 that got setup today. Works fine and gives more stats than  the PlusNet offering   ;)

The only downside I've noticed for the ZyXel is the User Interface is a little slow. Updated to the latest firmware and it's still slow, but works better in IE than Chrome.

How does the ZyXel VMG8924 work on ECI cabinets? I know theyre not matching chipsets but does it still give good sync rates? If the Hub One doesnt work too well with Plusnet we'll probably try one  ::)

Also whats the difference between the VMG8924-B Series and VMG8924-B10A

VMG8924-B10A gives me consistently 2Mbps+ higher sync rates on an ECI cab compared to the HG612.

The model suffix "-B10A" is for PSTN and "-B30A" is for ISDN.

Yes get VMG8924-B10A for PSTN which xDSL runs on.

The only difference between the 2 is
WAN:
One RJ-11 (VMG8924-B10A) interface for VDSL (over POTS)
One RJ-45(VMG8924-B30A) interface for VDSL (over ISDN)

xDSL can run on either, but we use POTS (plain old telephone service) so you need the B10A
The rear of both versions are shown here: http://www.zyxel.com/uk/en/products_services/vmg8924_b_series.shtml?t=p

I haven't come across any B30A's, just double check though.

Is there a reason why people buy this modem/router? I'm mainly looking for stability, high syncs, and bug free firmware. Wireless doesnt have to be the best but just decent.  :D

I should be taking delivery of a Billion 8800NL R2 tomorrow, will be using it on my 300-400m Huawei connected line, I'm hoping it works rather well.

The ZyXEL? It's given me the best mix of high sync/low error rates compared to any other modem I've tried. It's passed OpenReach's MCT. I really like the simple webui it has. It has a decent Broadcom chipset and telnet isn't locked down, giving native access to the Broadcom CLI. You can pick them up pretty cheap new on EBay, I paid £40 for my 8924. For features, stability, modem efficiency and performance, nothing comes close at this price imo. I also quite like the styling of it. It comes with both a stand and a wall mounting bracket, and the all black finish matches my setup. If you need 5ghz ac then get the 8924, if 2.4ghz wireless n is enough or if using in bridge mode with your own router then the 8324 should do. The 5ghz ac Wi-Fi card inside is the only difference between the 2.

I haven't tried it personally but recent reviews of the Billion 8800NL R2 suggests that the Broadcom chipset used doesn't perform as well as the chipset used in the previous R1 version. The HG612 syncs a little lower on my line than the ZyXEL, with similar error rates.

I'm on an ECI DSLAM, around 700-800m from the cabinet.

edit: just looked on Google Maps and taking the shortest possible route my line could take it appears I'm actually more like 900m from the cabinet. The last engineer who was out mapped my line right to the cabinet and my line actually runs in the opposite direction to the end of my street and back up the other side adding another 100m or so on to that. I sync at 50/7, that seems way too high for that distance, even with a brand new line.
