Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I would like some opinions on this router+modem.

I'm currently eying this one out on a popular site. I have a BT 80/20 fibre. BT tv, multicast being a must. Have found a very informative setup guide for multicast and this Billion router.

My current router is a BT HH5 version A. to my understanding this doesn't support G.INP. I thought I could unlock one of my old HG612 modems with Wolfies software B030SP08. (Which I've done) but not attached as yet. Would this be an improvement over a stand alone BT HH5 Verision A to support G.INP ie unlocked hg612 via WAN port on BT HH5.

I admit I'm a novice but a good learner. This was all new to me but I've grasped the basics in the last three days on some technical points as not to frustrate members.

Option A. Go with the bullion. Option B go with unlocked Hg612 and BT HH5 vA

I know the billion is the best option but I have said, other hg612 ready to go.

Current stats on stand alone BT HH5. Not happy with SNR. all thoughts welcome. Again sorry for newbie question

Just connect up the HG612 to the HH5A and enjoy G.INP. It's a quick fix.

The decision whether to replace those with a Billion is easier to make when everything is running fine.
And after you've made the decision, the comparison is also better.

The noise margin is fine - your connection is going as fast as it can.

That's great thanks. Just want a decent line quality. Ping test 20ms O Jitter. Quality is coming up as B*

I only live a very short distance from the cabinet and 1000m away from the exchange.

Being so close I thought I'd achieve better. Brand new VDSL mk 3 faceplate with one of "mr telephone" "Vince" (eBay) cat6 rj11 to rj45 Adsl leads.

As you probably know G.INP will improve the line quality by removing excess coding bytes used by INP.

I assume you're on a Huawei cabinet which actually offers G.INP.

You thought you'd achieve better what?

Yeah using this site I was able to ascertain that my line was on Huawei cab.

Improved ping and quality rating. How does the line stack up in your opinion.

Above graph - not hard wired but on 5ghz standing next to the router using my iPhone 6+ and a good paid app called network analyser. (Not ideal, but just for a peak at graphs) Wired I ping at 20, wireless I ping at solid 30.

Re my stats in previous posts. Is 6db supposed to be the norm for d/l on SNR.

Wireless will always be worse than wired. Your line quality may depend on your ISP in part and BT is known to have routing issues.

6dB is the target but your connection has reached it's max speed so the excess noise margin is just a bonus not a problem.

Great Dray. Much appreciated for your time.

Is there any special reason for the red marked wan cable other than colour coding. It's not a crossed cable so I assume any cat 6 would work via the Wan port.

Great learning curb. So noise at max speed is not a negative

It's not noise it's noise margin or SNR margin. It's effectively the margin of safety between the current level of interference and a higher level which is likely to cause the modem to lose sync. So, the larger the value of the margin, the more stable your connection is likely to be.

It's just colour coding. Any Cat5E cable will be fine.

Super.

One last question. In order to get the stats via the web. I'm going to lose another Ethernet port on my hh5. Is there no other way to negate this to work through wan. Ie modem lan 1 - hh5 wan. Modem lan 2 - hh5 Ethernet port.

Do I leave one in or only insert when I want to check the stats.

Mine is wired like that - LAN1-WAN on router, LAN2-LAN on router, but someone did suggest a static route that might work the other day

You only need LAN2 connected when you want to get the stats, which is 24*7 for me ;)

Exactly. 24/7. Thanks mate.

I've just received this from Billion sales. Sounds like they consider it to be redundant after a very short period in production.

Hi Nick

The 8800AXL is discontinued I’m afraid.

The replacement model, the 8900AX-1600, will be available in January.

I notice Billion have not specified a year   It's been due for release "next month" for the best part of a year already.
