I'm going to move an account from BT to Plus.net.
Do we really need to wait for a MAC code these days?
-
Yes, or your broadband will be ceased and you have to start again with the new ISP. Could be offline for a week or two.
-
The MAC is effectively the permission for the new ISP to take over your connection seamlessly.
-
Up to five working days for a MAC.
Awesome.

Hopefully it wont take that long some ISPs produce them sooner.
It's still a lot quicker than the old process which some of us remember could cause downtime of several weeks without adsl. I agree with the theory of Mac keys as without it we could see more cases of incorrect take over of lines without permission.

Hi boost,
Glad to hear you're looking at moving over to Plusnet.
As many members have already confirmed, we would need a MAC code to migrate the broadband over which takes 5-7 working days from the point of order placement from our end. If you're moving your phone over to Plusnet this would follow 10-12 working days after the broadband service has migrated over successfully.
Hope this helps!

Well, I got the MAC but when I returned to order I was not asked for it! Mind you, it wasn't able to check the potential line speed either, so some sort of error at the time? Perhaps I should call up and manually hand the MAC over? :o

This has been quite an enlightening process.
I have discovered the following:
1. You cannot submit a MAC code to the 'chat to us, y0' thing on the website due to... who knows
2. You cannot submit a MAC code via the telephone unless you are the 'account holder', regardless that your mobile number and email address may be present on the account. Plus.net take the data protection act very seriously although I'm at a complete loss as to how a third party benefits from providing a MAC code?
3. Apparently you *can* submit it via the Plus.net portal but I've not been able to get this to work:

All I have to do now, is get my deaf grandparents to call in and officially announce me as the account holder.
Job done!
