Title: New Fibre Router, advice needed!
Post by: TomT on June 01, 2014, 09:26:55 AM
Hi
Since Jan 2013 I've been using an Asus rt-n65 router and its worked quite well.
Over the last few weeks I've been having random reboot issues and Asus sent me some beta firmware to try.. Unfortunately that hasn't helped so they've advised the router may be faulty.

Amazon have agreed to refund the full amount I paid, as they have no stock of this router.

So now I'm looking for a replacement and would like some advice.

I would like a router that has all the standard features, firewall, port forwarding etc but I'd also can gigbit lan, guest WiFi, VPN termination etc..

On the 65U any changes made to WiFi, port forwarding, dhcp etc all restart the wan interface.  Ideally I'd like that not to happen.

Wireless coverage is also important.
I have either an ECI or HG612(unlocked) modem.

The billion range look good, but I've heard mixed reports on wireless and stability issues.

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Are you wanting an all-in-one unit or just a router to work with the BToR modem.

I'm easy either way. I gave an ECI and a HG, so can use either of those if needed.

Sorry Tom,  Ive been rather busy over the past few weeks and it appears your post got overlooked.

I think on these forums the billion seems to be favoured by quite a few members, so one of their models would perhaps be worth looking at to use with the BToR modems.

When it comes to all in one units the choice atm is rather limited.

Les-70 has done a mini review of the Bipac 8800NL  (http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=14030.msg264452#msg264452) that contains some good info.

I myself however find the Billions lack of gbE ports a restriction for my own requirements and am very happy with my Zyxel VMG8324.  Its not without its quirks either and if you read this thread (http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=13769.0) all its warts are disclosed.

Ive also been testing another lantiq based VDSL modem recently which is 5Ghz wireless, but to be honest unless I am right next to the router is a waste of time. The 2.4 Ghz wireless on my Zyxel out performs it in any other room and at least I can get a half decent signal on the patio in my garden.

Thanks for the reply.
I did but the Billion 7800DX, but it's going back.

I've had constant issues with wireless and the management interface.

So I'm open to ideas again !
Broadband buyer are suggesting either :

DrayTek Vigor 2860 Triple-WAN VDSL/ADSL2+ Broadband Router w/ Load Balancing, VPN & 3G/4G LTE Support

or

ZyXEL SBG3300-N Triple-WAN VPN Fibre/VDSL/ADSL2+ Wireless-N Router w/ Load Balancing & 3G/4G Support (300Mbps)

Any ideas or thoughts on either of these or another alternative ?

Thanks

I'm afraid I don't have personal experience with either of these routers. The draytek was a tad over my budget.

I had at one point given serious consideration to the zyxel sbg3300-n.  I was only holding off because there was a known issue with streaming and iOS 5 devices.

I believe this issue was fixed in March when they released a firmware fix which was at the time I bought my zyxel vmg8324b10a.  Theres a couple of users on this forum who have one and seem pretty pleased with it.

---

Ps the sbg3300 works with dslstats, and since the firmware is similar to mine, then it may also work with bald eagles new version of hg612modem stats.

Price aside if it was me with those options, I'd personally go for the zyxel sbg3300-n

Thanks - I decided to try an Asus RT-AC98U

It arrived yesterday, setup last night so I'll see how it goes.

Thanks

 ;D

Not had any issues so far, all seems good.
My MAC Book is connected at 450Mbps which seems OK,
my Nexus 5 only manages 390Mbps

:)
