Title: Ghostery , stop web bugs/tracking and ads
Post by: AdrianH on January 25, 2012, 06:04:35 AM
Just trying out Ghostery (http://www.ghostery.com/download) which is available for many popular browsers. Preventing web bugs and tracking increqases security and browsing speed.

Quote
Ghostery is your window into the invisible web – tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons that are included on web pages in order to get an idea of your online behavior.

Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity.

Thanks Adrian, that's a new one on me. Oddly, the version for Firefox on the Mozilla addons site is more recent than the version offered on the Ghostery site. I've installed it to give it a try.

Just added it as an extension to Opera.
See how it goes. Thanks Adrian.

It's working already, blocking google analytics. The pages are loading much faster.

I use Opera and used to run Host files which are great for killing nasties and adverts but this app lets you see exactly what it finds and gives a lot of detail about the companies involved. I find it very interesting that many "security " sites are harvesting data and linking to other sites at each visit  >:D

And yes, remove all the hidden carp from a page and browsing gets to be much faster/smother.

We wont tell them that the advert server at Kitz is not on their list  ;D

Yes, I've got that option ticked. It just updates the library of stuff which can be blocked. If it blocks something which you don't want to be blocked you can easily whitelist the site in question.

Yes but the ads in the header are from elsewhere and a nice little earner for future sites methinks. I gave up Google ads ages back, huge drain for little gain and they keep changing the rules and shut accounts for breaching things you know nothing about.
