Title: CPU Upgrade
Post by: Shaft on April 27, 2015, 09:43:28 AM
Going to upgrade my cpu from Intel Dual Core to Quad Core.  Intend to fit a Intel Core 2 Quad, Q6600  2.40GHz
My PC is as follows:
Mthbd: Asrock G41M-VS3 SP1
Wins 7 Professional 64bit.
Cpu:  Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 @ 2.50GHz
Mem: 8.00GB
Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce GTX750 Ti.

Question: Do I have to upgrade the BIOS and how do I do it, before replacing CPU or after?

Acording to ASRock website, G41M-VS3, CPU Support List  (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/G41M-VS3/index.us.asp?cat=CPU) the Q6600 is supported on All BIOS versions (Unsure if 'SP1' denotes a different version though).

Do I have to upgrade the BIOS and how do I do it, before replacing CPU or after?
If you ever need to update BIOS to support a new CPU it must be done before replacing the CPU (using a CPU that the existing BIOS supports).  I believe there are now exceptions in a few Motherboards that allow BIOS update without CPU.
