Hi, I am currently with ADSL24 and pay £20 a month.
I'm thinking of changing and going with BT unlimited ADSL. I won't be saving any money, but it'll be unlimited and I get a free router!
Am I doing the right thing?

I suggest that you read the small print very carefully. It's not a move I would make, but maybe that's just prejudice on my part.

Why? Tell me more.

Also looking at TalkTalk, almost half what I'm paying now for Unlimited everything :o

All I meant is that 'unlimited' seems to have many different definitions in the broadband world, and you should check very carefully before committing yourself to a long contract. Also, have a look at the ISP ratings (http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/ISP_ratings.php).
-
I think you will find all these 'unlimited' packages come with a long list of T&C's and also most operate a fair usage policy.
Regarding TalkTalk......speaking form experience I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.
Ask yourself is cost the most important thing or do you want an isp with excellent support when/if things go wrong. If its the later then keep away from BT and TalkTalk

Hi
I always thought that your current ISP was one of the better ISPs
might be worth having a look at the following link

:( :( :(
You tend to get what you pay for . Is certainly true with Broadband .
Unlimited is most misused and misleading word used in ISP advertising

AFAIK BT ADSL option 3 and BT Infinity option 2 are "truly unlimited*" (as from March 2011)
I believe Sky and BE are the only other ISPs offering "truly unlimited*" packages.
truly unlimited* = no fair use policy actually implemented.
-
So do BT Option 3 (Unlimited) throttle at peak times?
Does the 40GB plan throttle?

NO
Does the 40GB plan throttle?
YES
But you'd best not take my word for it, check out the BT webpage

Surely they should throttle the Unlimited users, not 40GB users?!
What's classed as P2P? Playstation 3? Spotify?

File sharing....Torrents etc

What about downloading movies on my PS3 and spotify and stuff like that? i.e. Legal stuff.

Not at all.........if you are on a truly unlimited package, you will no doubt be paying more than the person who is on a fixed monthly download limit and as such should get what you are paying for.
If you exceed your fixed monthly limit the isp will contact you and warn you about this, which could result in your speeds being throttled at peak times.
-

Spotify is P2P
Some online games are P2P.
You need to take the information you've gained on here and ask further questions on other more specific forums.
-
Just a thought, which isp's are actually LLU enabled in your local exchange?
-
No not at all.
ADSL24 is a brilliant ISP but it's a pain having to watch my peak time downloads.
Think I'll go with BT's unlimited usage on Broadband and Phone. It's about the same as I'm paying now BUT It means I get:
A new 'N' router
£30 Quidco Cashback
3 Months with £8 Discount
Can sell my current router for £20
So really I'm gaining £24 discount + £30 Cashback + £20 sale of old router = Unlimited Downloads and £74!
-
So do BT Option 3 (Unlimited) throttle at peak times?
NO
Correction.....even option 3 is affected "when the network is busy" (a BT quote) as regards P2P. So at peak times there may be throttling.
-
Really?!
That's a bit bad. I'll be paying for their highest service and getting slow ass speeds at peak times?
How much do they throttle though? I won't be on Infinity, just their standard BB and I can get 3mb maximum.
-
I have already asked you but.......what isp's are LLU enabled in your local exchange.Using an isp who is LLU enabled cuts the need for ip profiling.

TalkTalk and AOL so I won't be going with them.
IP profiling??
