Title: Zyxel VMG8924-B10A err_connection_reset
Post by: starfire on November 04, 2016, 04:05:31 PM
Hi,

Been running my router fine without issue with Plusnet FTTC for some time.

Last 2 days something has gone wrong, for certain websites only (eg, bbc, ebay) I will lose access and Chrome reports err_connection_reset - other browsers such as IE and Edge also report similar failure as do other computers via ethernet and mobiles via wifi.

So, it's not a computer, browser or wifi/ethernet specific issue.

If I reboot the router everything returns to normal for a few hours then it will fail again in a similar way.

Note I can both ping and traceroute to the affected websites when the fault occurs, it seems purely a http/https type issue...

I factory reset via the GUI and reloaded my backup config file afterwards but the issue remains.

Anyone come across anything like this before ?  I'd like to say the router is failing but the nature of the fault doesn't seem like a hardware problem.

Regards.

Hi

Might be worth clearing all the log files out in case it is running out of storage/memory.  Also it might be some device/computer on your network that is opening a lot of connections and that is exhausting the ZyXel's firewall/NAT which will only be able to hold on to a finite number of open connections. When you get the problem go to the home page and then click right to get to some diag info and it will say here what the NAT connection/Memory usage is, although this may not be accurate or reflect the true state of connections open.

Regards

Phil

hmmmm  although Ive not had "err_connection_reset" issues.. this weekend I have have seen sluggishness connecting to some sites.  Particularly https sites such as facebook/you tube.... with the page not loading until I re-request it.

I too had done a few tracerts and everything seemed ok.
When it first started happening (Friday night) I wondered if it could be my DNS (Changed to OpenDNS a couple of weeks ago), but since I could tracert ok I thought perhaps not.

I havent had chance to look further as it seems a bit erratic...  will perhaps stop for a few mins, then be ok again.
With it for me just being https I also wondered about MTU, but that seems silly as I haven't changed anything.

Your post has just prompted me to do a speed test, but that seems perfectly fine.

Hi,

Well its happened more and more so I've disconnected the Zyxel and gone back to my old setup which has been rock solid.

Pity as the Zyxel synced about 6Mbps faster but I need stability and reliability over speed.

I had tried clearing down all logs and in fact turned off syslog logging and everything else I could find but same result and I tried with a much smaller MTU on the router but no difference.
The old issue of my 2.4Ghz wireless failing also reoccurred so that was it really.

Thanks.
