Title: Hign sync low download speed???
Post by: cosrush on June 05, 2021, 08:00:39 AM
I'm hoping some of you kind experts may be able to suggest some solutions to an ongoing issue I am having with my VDSL FTTC connection.

I had for a few years 55Mbps DL with 9.99Mbps UL on superfast broadband and recently renewed my contract at which point the sync dropped to 33Mbps with UL at 9Mbps. The SNRM on the DL was 8.

I spoke to my ISP directly several times who just palmed me off with 'it's above your minimum threshold so there's nothing wrong'. I then signed up for their 'community' help and have been getting a good response with things to check.

The odd thing is I noticed straight off the bat that when I looked at my line stats the UL was pegged at 9.99Mbps which to me appeared that the connection was stuck on a 10/40 profile. The help from the community concurred with this and some changes were made at their end. At this point my sync jumped to 45Mbps.
However all my speedtests (different testers used, wired, and direct to the BT Master socket) gave a DL speed of 33Mbps.

This morning in the early hours my line re-synced again and I am now connect at 50.5Mbps DL (although the UL has now dropped to 3Mbps!).

But....speedtests are still showing max 35Mbps.

Does anyone have any thoughts of why it would be doing this? or things I could check?

It still seems to me as if the DL speed has been capped somehow.

I had the same mins in to the re contract, 57d to 32-36
Is that speed what your ISP offers for lower capped package's

I'd say I'm on a 40/10 after re contract
The ISP says cab faults and that's true on the cab with many having no or slow internet
The ISP said keep on eci cards but as I'm told that's not correct

There is cab faults but that may or may not be my problem as this was fast

I believe they offer 10/40 fibre and 20/80 fibre extra.

Would the ISP be Sky by any chance?

They have a horrible habit of regrading customers who sign up to new contracts.

I know of a few who after recontracting get a drop to the 40/10

No not Sky. A BT supplied ISP.

Certainly sounds like they have regraded you from 55/10 to 40/10.

Unfortunately many ISP's no longer have defined products (where you buy 40/10 or 80/20) but instead they provision you on a product that matches your lines estimates.
This means if your estimates are in-between 2 products then you may be placed on the lower product.

BT do this with their Fibre 1 product, placing you on 40/10 or 55/10 depending on your estimates.
They only seen to do this at sign-up though and don't tend to regrade existing customers.

Sky are bad at regrading customers who recontract and it's next to impossible to get the line upgraded to the higher package.

It's not a good practice but the issue is the ISP providers you a quote/estimate/range of speedsb that you will receive, which you accept when you sign the contract.
If you are within those estimates they don't need to do anything.
