Title: Forum Error.
Post by: kitz on October 16, 2010, 11:08:24 AM
The forum had some down-time this morning after a server reboot.
It seems that one of the forum files got corrupted during this process which caused errors to be displayed.

Thanks to eric for phoning me, so I was able to restore things to what they should be fairly promptly.

I can now confirm that after investigation into what happened, the forum software appeared to have a hissy... probably due to someone attempting to post during the 'shut down' phase which corrupted one of the files.
The time of amendment of the corrupted file was exactly at the same time as the server reboot so it wasnt anything sinister, and just appears to have occurred because the site was busy and the database was writing something at the time of shut-down.

Seems this happened again, not entirely sure why tbh.

Have just upgraded the forum software and will continue to monitor the situation. If it happens again with this new version, I will investigate further.

My forum access failed just after half past seven this evening (11.11.10) but was found OK at about 0030 on 12.11.10. It was still not accessible at about 23.30 (11.11.10)

Hi guys ... long time no speaky

Thanks for the info Tony, that ties in pretty much with what happened.

After an alert from Eric to Kitz tonight, we had a look at the forum and restored functionality within a few minutes. We then decided to take the forum offline in order to perform an upgrade to the software.

As Kitz says, if it continues to happen with this new version, further investigation will be necessary - I am hoping it's a bug that has now been fixed - fingers crossed :)

Thank you very much to the 3 people who kindly took the time to notifiy me by e-mail.  :)
Unfortunately due to the timeline of events (OK I was tucking into a pizza when it actually occurred) and the 1st I was aware was when Eric contacted me via phone.

Funny enough, it was our intention to take the forum off-line for a short while that evening to perform the software upgrade anyhow.  I normally leave any maintenance if possible until late evening/wee small hours so that it affects as few people as possible.
So we'd already scheduled pizza then the upgrade for that particular evening :D

Eric's message came through at exactly the same time as we'd just sat down in front of the PC to look at the SMF upgrade which couldnt be done straight-off via the package manager due to forum mods.

Therefore I didnt see the email notifications until later. :/
