I use Home Plugs to link the router to the PVR downstairs, with a usual Ethernet connection from router to the nearby Home Plug. Owing to the configuration of electrics, office furniture and so on, it requires a long cable easily tripped over. I could get a spur from the mains socket, so shortening the cable to a less hazardous position. Is my feeling that wireless from router to Home Plug correct?
( sorry fro another low grade topic  :))

Sorry, I don't understand the question
-
My understanding is that near your router there are no free sockets, so you have a long run of Ethernet cable from the router to the home plug?
As for the part about wireless to the home plug, I'm afraid you've lost me too?
-
My understanding is that Ren is asking thus:
"Is it possible to use a WiFi link between the modem/router and the Home Plug, thus doing away with the long Ethernet patch cable? I've a feeling it can't be done."
;)
-
Is it not possible to just use ethernet and put it under carpet or boards etc? or run the cable outside of house?
I think wifi on home plugs isnt possible.
-
You may be able to construct such a link using a hotel wifi extender like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007PTCFFW but it will end up being a bit Heath-Robinson :)

@burakkucat kurrekt!
@ Chrysalis I don't think practicable.

Hi
You should be able to do an access point to access point, and if you bought a 4 port LAN access point, you could then have a patch cable between the access point and home plug. The access point would need a power socket, which I as sum you have spare next to home plug and ofcourse, you would have to set the access point up first before moving into position.
I hope that helps a little
Many thanks
John

Do what you would do if home plugs didnt exist.
Either 100% wireless with maybe some repeaters if weak signal.
Or ethernet.
Home plugs are horrible devices that need taking of the market :(
Also modern wireless standards in my opinion outperform home plugs.

The problem is that most of the homeplugs requires use of an ethernet cable to attach to the 'base' Home plug. ie Router -> Homeplug using CAT5.
However, would a range extender help... perhaps even something like one of these (http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/products/10562-netgear-wn3000rp-200uks/)?

TP-Link sell various wireless homeplugs that are probably compatible with your current plugs. :)
-
as kitz said if you going to tie up the socket, use it on a repeater/extender.

My 2p, I had this device and it was very poor performance wise, but I believe they make a newer model now that is better, TP Link repeaters I find are good, especially the AC 5ghz one :)

^ thanks jid. I'd just picked the first one that I found which was neat and compact.
renuloup is going to be tying up a socket anyhow for a repeater/extender which is why I chose that kind of design rather than a stand alone, but there are other makes & models.

Yep they are the smallest ones I've seen, very compact :) I believe you can buy pass through repeaters now, maybe renluop could consider one of those?
-
Thanks for ideas, all. :)
-
Pass through homeplug maybe?
http://www.broadbandbuyer.com/Shop/ShopSearch.asp?CategoryID=766
?
-
I think the pass through is more appropriate to the end remote from the router. but thanks all the same.
-
I thought you could use it on socket that your router is presumably plugged into and that might be closer, sorry
-
if your good with home DIY jobs then getting some CAT5/CAT6 cable from A to B will not be difficult or untidy you just need to plan out the route and be ready for some wall or ceiling drilling once you have made the route for the cable the job becomes so much easyier :)
-
Me! Two left hands on my right foot! ::) ;D

Check out the Devolo 9231. Mains pass through with 3 Ethernet ports. Not cheap, but I am a satisfied user.
Whilst I agree that cable is the best option our landlord would not agree and SWMBO won't want cables strung everywhere
Cheers

To go back to your original question, you mentioned a spur from the mains.
If you mean an extension cable from the socket it will work.
You need to use a good quality extension cable and preferably not plug anything else in other than the Homeplug, to prevent interference.
(I have in the past used an extension cable with a Homeplug and it does work, even with other things plugged in as well but that was probably luck :o ;D )
Be aware that you can get Homeplugs that include WiFi (2.4 & 5Ghz) but it will need to be connected to an ethernet cable as usual.
See example.
http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/products/19721-devolo-9385/
Search google for 'homeplug with wifi'
The example is the 1st one I found but there are others.
I know Homeplugs are not liked by some but they do perform a useful function if you cannot route cables. (Or are not allowed ;D )

Thanks, but matters like that are on reserve list....health queries. :-\
