Mrs Weaver can never remember the difference between upload and download and just picks one term or the other at random. How could I help her remember which is which?
-
tell her to imagine the internet is in the sky. anything you take from the internet you download and anything you send you upload. I can't think of any other easy analogies.
-
Just tested it. Promising start.
-
Ha, why not draw a picture? An arrow going into the computer for upload, an arrow going away from the computer for download.
-

... except that you've got it the wrong way round. :)

:hmm: Perhaps gogeta is Mrs Weaver. ;)

I wonder if an Astronaut aboard ISS would agree?

Eh, not the way I see it. But everyone has their own ways.

I have the same issue with the wife and scrolling on web pages.
You say "scroll down" to her and the page goes UP. I don't get it......

If the data is coming into your computer from the internet, that's download, by definition. If it's going away from your computer, that's upload.

I'm pretty sure my wife, when asked to scroll down, does the opposite on a tablet from a PC.
Presumably complicated on tablets by the fact that you have to swipe your finger upwards when you want to otherwise "scroll down" (ie for me to see further down the page).

Have you tried Mac OS X? Apple reversed the directional effect of the mouse scroll wheel, a few versions ago. Called it 'natural scroll' iirc. Natural or not is a matter of opinion (I say 'not'), but it's totally alien to anybody who was already used to a mouse.
Now, whenever one installs OS X the head scratching begins 'Where is the setting to fix the scrolling direction?'. :D

ChromeOS mouse settings Traditional or Australian scrolling :)

Still having trouble with this. The problem now is she has forgotten the good analogy (so I will have to re-teach it to her) and overthinks it so that when she wants to say the right thing for ‘download’ she picks upload because she thinks she is going to get it wrong so therefore she must need to reverse the word. It is invariably downloading that she gets wrong because she doesn’t happen to mention uploading situations often.
The ‘up in the sky’ thing is a good technique though.

Perhaps expand the 'sky' concept and imagine that the internet is coming from a satellite.
-
However we must not forget that the "Weaving Shed" is on the Isle of Skye and so there is further potential for confusion.
b*cat retreats to a safe distance away from Mrs Weaver's thrown saucepans, etc . . . ;)

Satellite is a good idea.
-
The same analogy but basically think of upload as leaving, up up and away. This is after all part of the idea of "the cloud", its up there.
Or you put things up on a shelf out of the way, you have to bring them down again to use them.
-
I like the shelf analogy.
