Title: Adding Gbit switch to Billion 8800nl
Post by: Oldjim on June 01, 2017, 01:20:52 PM
I presently have a Billion 8800NL on FTTC feeding into a Samknows Box which has Gbit LAN
As I see no reason to upgrade the router as the wireless works fine and it does everything I want but I am considering getting rid of the Samknows Box so I assume that a 5 port Gbit switch connected to the single Gbit port would work
Assuming I am correct is there any preference for the manufacturer or doesn't it matter
Of course the other option is to keep the Samknows box as it seems to work - thoughts please

Yes it would work. You can get a 5-port 1Gb unmanaged switch from Amazon for about a tenner. I tend to use TPlinks

The first two products that I came across in my search are --

TP-LINK TL-SG1005D (https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/KVM-Switches/TP-LINK-TL-SG1005D-Gigabit-Unmanaged-Desktop/B000N99BBC)
NETGEAR GS105UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-GS105UK-Gigabit-Unmanaged-Ethernet/dp/B0000E5SEQ)

Or this Netgear (https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-GS205-100UKS-Gigabit-Ethernet-Desktop/dp/B00AYRZYG4/ref=sr_1_6?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1496331021&sr=1-6&keywords=netgear+switch) is the one I use, some say it's better looking than the blue case ones!

I've got the 8 port version of Netgear GS105E (https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/KVM-Switches/NETGEAR-GS105E-200UKS-ProSAFE-Managed-Gigabit-Ethernet-Switch/B002YPJ8KM/).

It's only a few quid more expensive than the GS105 that burakkucat linked to but is VLAN capable.
