Title: Major Forum Upgrade.
Post by: kitz on July 20, 2011, 04:00:29 PM
The forums will be going offline in approx 10 minutes to carry out extensive maintenance and upgrade.  I am unsure how long this process will take.

When we come back up.. we may be SMF1 or SMF2 depending on how things go
Either way, when we do come back up.. things will look a bit strange for a while until I am able to reconfigure everything.

Wish us luck.

We're now live on SMF2...  and custom skin installed. :)

I still have quite a lot of tweaks to do so you may see a few oddities until I can get around to re-configuring all the settings so please bear with me a bit longer.

Well another painless manoeuvre that was carried out with your usual speed so much so that I never felt a thing and everything so-far is still looking hunky-dory.

Excellent work. :)  Now all I need to do is to find all of today's postings . . . otherwise I'll have nothing to read. ;)

The easiest way is to select * Show unread posts since last visit.

Which is at the top of the page next to your Avatar (make sure that section is not closed up)

That is a DNS/caching issue, if you clear your browser cache and reload the forum the buttons will be fine.

yw... I still working away in the background atm.. although I did take a short break to eat.  :D
I think all the heart stopping moments are out of the way now as far as the database goes.

My heart was in my mouth when I deleted everything from the old forum and it was a huge relief when the database copied back over and went in the new software ok.

I'll try correct the remaining images next.. then on to working on the new anti-spam features i'll be installing... which should help a lot.. and why I decided to go this route in the first place.

It could possibly be.  With doing a brand spanking new clean install rather than an upgrade I  have got rid of lots of code and stuff thats accumulated over the past 7 or 8 years.
We shall see properly when Ive installed the spam prevention features and any other mods.

There's something different about the place. Has someone been tinkering?
Nice job and well done Kitz. Your work is much appreciated.

Strange, notifications do not seem to be working "in this thread" but it is working in the Letters in Office 2003 thread.

Have not changed any settings and they all seem to be as they should be in my profile.

Noticed at some point last night we had a different skin with orange lettering in place  8)

Now we are back to normal, was that just experimental or is the skin going to change.?

Looks good to me not sure if its faster but certainly it is no slower. One minor point is that the logout and print (or mark read when viewing a topic)  buttons dont show properly for me using FF V5.

Kitz was working late last night on a problem with the online help not working properly, and temporarily changing to the default forum template was one of the tests she carried out. There's certainly no plan to change the forum colour to orange. :)

The help is working OK at present, but there may be more work to be done.

I thought it looked cool, orange lettering with a paler blue background. 8)

Although I do have a liking for blue and white  ;)

Yes the orange/pale blue skin you saw is the default SMF theme and I was working very late last night trying to iron out a few things, some of which required me switching between the default skin and our custom skin.

Although Ive been working on a 'test forum' for the past few weeks trying to make sure I could do as much as I could before performing the work on the live platform, there are still a few things that dont become apparent until they are applied on the live system.

So if you see the orang/pale blue skin, thats just me tweaking a few things on the core, and its only temporary whilst Im looking at some of the underlying stuff.

>> with the online help not working properly,

Yep the problem was with the core template.  I am glad to say that should now fixed.

>> One minor point is that the logout and print (or mark read when viewing a topic)  buttons dont show properly for me using FF V5.

This is most likely to be a caching problem... probably not helped by the fact that I have been switching between the 2 templates so many times.

I had the same problem myself this morning in both chrome + firefox 5 until I did a hard refresh using Ctrl + F5.
It seems to occur each time I upload a new CSS or switch templates... and its always the "last button" in the row that goes walkabout until you do a full refresh.

Just like to add my three pen'orth in your praise Kitz. I'm sure you get enormous satisfaction from the updating of the forum and the glitchless reloading of the database but it takes a lot of effort and heavy concentration so you must be worn out. As others have said the result is fine and maybe a little faster to load and no doubt future mods will be easier with SMF 2. Thanks.
