Title: Notification - Site down time.
Post by: kitz on February 08, 2008, 02:58:41 PM
Over the past year site traffic has grown enormously, and its that time of year when I look at my hosting requirements. Since the [main] site is now classified as pretty busy.. after discussions with my webhosts,  its been decided that the site would be better hosted on a brand new Quad Xeon server with more processing power.

My webhosts are going to deal with the transfer to new server tonight,  and a heads up that the site may experience a short period of downtime at around 9pm.  The forums will have to be closed during this period to ensure that any data during the migration is not duplicated or lost.

Hopefully it should only actually be down for a few mins whilst the database transfer takes place...
but I thought I best warn everyone in case you wonder whats happening. :)

No pub for me tonight Im afraid - doing stuff "behind the scenes"..  but I'll make up for it on Sat night  :drink:

On reflection, I think we should commend Kitz for her dedication in staying with it through the night. :)

Nice to see it's back up and running.

************************************************

Kitz, just in case you have overlooked it as you have been very busy, but are you going to alter or remove the Notification Site downtime tonight message above, just in case people think it's new or still relevant.

kitz isnt a happy bunny.

I still dont fully know what went wrong - but I believe it was something to do with anything that relied on PHP.

Ive also just had to spend some time re-writing code that run fine on the old server (such as the adsl checker) - but wouldnt work on the new server.
I use PHP5 but apparently it isnt yet installed on the new machine - hence why a lot of the dynamic content on the main site wasnt working either.

A tired kitz + coding != good combination

if ($kitz == "tired" + $kitz_is == "coding"){
 $kitz = "grumpy";
}

A large G&T (or whatever) I think would be in order at the moment.
Good luck!

Thanks for that reminder OF - but it was deliberately left there because there was still a lot of pages on the main site that werent working...

I only finished recoding some of the pages about 15 mins ago.  After I'd done that....  then I removed the front page notification.

lol.. I guess non-one saw the message I had up at one point (around 3am)  :blush:

heh - thanks - but I think I'll go get my head down for an hour or so soon...
then I at least stand half a chance of staying awake when I go out for "drinkies" tonight :)

Any update on the ADSL checker distance from exchange function?
I find this really useful. Samknow does not do a distance by road check and is a lot more difficult to use...
Thanks

Hi Gavin and welcome

The problem with the adslchecker distance is detailed in this thread (http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,11524.0.html).

I have made some progress, with a totally new design (which isnt yet live), Ive found a new way to calculate direct distance, but as regards to by road, there is a major problem with implementation on trying to get these figures since google changed things.   I am aware of it..  but unfortunately there isnt any easy fix, and atm Ive come to a halt because the API wont let you take these figures and store them so I can output them.   I need to try and devise some whole new code to attempt a work around which could take a while :/

Taken back out of maintenance mode...  will complete later.

That was interesting...  lost my adsl connection part way through trying to do a forum upgrade  (Its not been right since all the power outages yesterday) :-\
