Title: Disconnects, low speed and a noisy telephone
Post by: hake on April 30, 2010, 09:19:54 AM
After weeks with a very poor ADSL service, eventually an Openreach technician called, did some tests inside and outside of my house and identified and repaired a bad joint under the cover in the pavement.  Result: almost no errored seconds, no disconnects and a quiet telephone.

The ADSL service has been patchy since I can remember.  This is the first time a BT person has visited my premises since 1988.

Not straight away. The hiss returned so the pavement was dug up 400 metres down the road and some wires put in a duct.  The telephone cabling in this district was typically laid on soil and then covered over with soil - ducting was not employed 50 years ago.  The problem was seemingly cured but returned yet again within 24 hours.  Finally, BT Openreach laid an armoured cable from the street to my house front.  The old cable had had a BT repair about 20 years ago when the corroded steel tube it was originally protected by failed to prevent a spade from severing it.  After six days, the phone is silent and the ADSL errors are negligible.

I think I may now break the tea caddy open and celebrate.   :)
