Post by: UncleUB on January 07, 2009, 05:56:51 PM
I am thinking of getting a new TV,can anyone give the benefit of their experience on the pro's and con's of LCD v's Plasma  TV sets.
I am after something between 37" and 42" max.  :)

I have a friend who has a 37" LCD TV and I have to say the picture is much much more crisp.

You tend to find that Plasmas are considerably heavier - although that doesn't really matter.

I personally only have a Toshiba 32" LCD, 1080P etc.

I am happy with LCD screens but you would be best going to a local Currys/Comet and comparing the picture for yourself, others see the image differently and as it is you watching the TV, you need what is best for yourself. (imo anyway)

LCD v Plasma thats a good one :). LCD's are cheaper, Plasma's tend to give better display, Plasma's break easy, Plasma's use considerably more power than their LCD cousins  :) it depends on what you want :)

A good friend of mine who works in the videoconferencing business believes that Plasma is now officially "dead".
His view is that LCD now does everything Plasma does, but is better in every way. 8)

Rule of thumb is up to and including 32" LCD, for 37" and over Plasma....

Here's the view from Which  http://www.which.co.uk/advice/lcd-vs-plasma-tvs/index.jsp

In that they say, "However, 42-inch plasma TVs for under £1,000 are now easy to come by. Prices for comparable screen sizes are now pretty similar."

You can get top of the range 42" plasma's like Panasonic Viera for <£600 with 5 years warranty.

I personally would get myself a 32" LCD atm, but I can't afford it so I will stick with the old Ferguson 28" CRT  :(

This is the TV I have:-

It is the "smallest Full HD panel that Toshiba have" and it is excellent!

That is 200 quid more than I could get a Samsung 32" with built in Freeview....

You can get a 42" Panasonic Viera with 5 years warranty for that price.

As a guide, a year ago I bought myself a 32 inch Panasonic LCD and that is big enough sat in a room 27 feet by 14 feet and viewing from around 8 feet away, but still passable the full 27 feet away.  For the past 25 years I have always bought Panasonic when buying TVs for the whole extended family and never been disappointed.

I might have to settle for an LCD,still if they use less energy I'm all for it.  :)
