Title: Nice $100 Czech Router
Post by: phi2008 on October 10, 2015, 02:40:00 PM
Noticed this over at a Linux forum, it runs OpenWrt, and comes from CZ.NIC a non-profit organization running the .cz top level domain of the Czech Republic.

Features

Turris Omnia will be available in several versions.
Here is a list of its most important features:

CPU   1.6 GHz dual-core ARM
RAM   up to 1 GB DDR3
Storage   4 GB flash
LAN   5× Gbit port
WAN   1× Gbit port
SFP
USB   2× 3.0
Mini PCI Express   2×
mSATA / mini PCI Express (optional) 1×
Wi-Fi
(optional)   3×3 MIMO 802.11ac

Apart from that, Turris Omnia also has SIM card slot, RTC with battery backup, crypto chip for secure random number generation, dimmable RGB LEDs, pin headers with GPIO, I²C, SPI and more.

You can make a non-binding pre-order(that gives you order priority when the hardware is released) if you're interested.

I.e. starting at US $100.

(Of course you'll need three of them . . . )

Why would a router modem/router need so much onboard ram 1GB and 4 GB Flash memory my old PC has only 4GB DDR2  :(

The non-binding pre-order is good, you can wait until the product is released and price options finalised, then decide whether you want to go ahead ...

I'm wondering if I could run a dhcpv6 server on it.

Linksys recently released their own OpenWrt router, the WRT1900ACS (http://linuxgizmos.com/linksys-wrt-gains-faster-soc-more-ram-and-openwrt/), dual 1.6GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, similar other specs, but only 128MB flash. So really the Turris is rather similar to commerical OpenWrt routers but with extra flash - I'm sure the designers had good reasons for their decisions.

EDIT:

I should have also included this from the website explaining the design considerations -

More than just a router. The open-source center of your home.

Home router is necessary to connect you to the Internet but it is idle most of the time, just eating electricity. Why not use it for more tasks?
With powerful hardware, Turris Omnia can handle gigabit traffic and still be able to do much more. You can use it as a home server, NAS, printserver and it even has a virtual server built-in.

I like all the ports on it. Five ethernet ports, one described as WAN. A couple of USB3 ports, one SATA even, a SIM slot. And a decent processor - all good stuff.
