I can't help noticing the harness for climbing poles now is very different, the current one is more like a parachute harness but without the chute!

Well spotted - the same belt I used to climb with albeit the wearing of a hard hat was mandatory when I started climbing.
Thankfully, the introduction of the climbing harness and fall-arrest lanyard will see fewer incidents in our industry ... propped up further by the latest (couple of years old) introduction of the 'Tetra' system, which allows you to clip yourself to your ladder as you ascend it, both at the pole end and the house end. In our speak, there is no more 'free climbing'.

Indeed so, tiffy.
I never saw them or used them in anger, but they were to ensure the 'ringer generators' were operating at 75Hz.

Ahh, thought they looked like large tuning forks.
Had to check that 75 Hz was within the human audible range which of course it is.
I imagine the 75 Hz AC ringing signal would have been electro-mechanical generated in the old Stowger exchanges and there would have been some form of speed control on the generating unit motor to trim the frequency.

Again, I've never ever worked on them ... just simply seen them in action. There's a few old sweats on here that would be able to answer your question though, if they see the post of course.
