Title: Expanded/normal views of threads or emails
Post by: chrissie on May 14, 2008, 11:44:37 AM
Don't think I explained that properly though perhaps someone might know what I mean.  Sometimes in a thread on a forum, the page fits the screen and can be read without scrolling across the page.  Other times posts go out of the screen width-wise and one has to scroll to read the whole page.... same as emails sometimes.

Does anyone know why this happens and if one can make the extra wide post/email back to normal screen size?

It's usually when there's something like a very long link in there which causes side scrolling (as it's called).

Although usually more common when anyone posts a big picture.

Chrissie,
As Floydy says it is often caused by long urls that can be a pain. TinyURL is a program that reduces very long urls to a few numbers and letters. The ’Reply’  page has a url of:
http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?action=post;topic=2082.0;num_replies=3
But shortened it is
http://tinyurl.com/6csw9h

To use Tiny URL is very easy once you have a shortcut link in your Links or Bookmarks toolbar.

To put the TinyURL on your toolbar open this page:
http://tinyurl.com/
Scroll down to where it says ‘Add TinyURL to your Tools bar’
Click and hold then drag the blue ‘TinyURL’ to your Links toolbar or Bookmark toolbar and drop it.
That only needs to be done once and then, you are cooking with gas.

~
Whenever you want to shrink a long url to send to someone:
~
Open the web page that you want to refer to.
Click ‘TinyURL’ in toolbar.
The Tiny page will appear and the url will be displayed and the shortened version, under which it says ‘open in new window’. Right click the blue writing and select ‘Copy link location’
Go back to your post where you want to paste it and set cursor then right click and select ’paste’.
~
So it is:
Click ‘TinyURL’
R click ’Open in new window’
Select ’Copy link location’
R click where you want to put it
Select ‘Paste.’

If you use Firefox you can install the Tiny URL Creator extension, which adds a Tiny URL creation item to the right-click menu.

I like that, Eric. Just got it.
Will keep the button on my Bookmarks toolbar though, old habits die hard.

(SMF doesn't seem to get the scroll bar right on a single line post)

Just look what happens.

Jelv gets a 'Respected Member' title and promptly goes and widens the forums by another two yards.   ??? :o

Congrats, anyway, Jelv for that well deserved title and thanks for all the help that you have given to members.
Keep up the good work.

Very, very interesting!

Do you by any chance use Firefox?

Dave, you arn't still using your old 10" monitor are you?

and do you by any chance use IE7, Safari or Opera?

I've just discovered Firefox does not break long lines on hyphens whereas the other three do. :o

It's one of the things I like about SMF, you just get the scroll bars on the individual duff post, not the whole page.

Congrats, anyway, Jelv for that well deserved title and thanks for all the help that you have given to members.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks

Is that also splitting the line at the second hyphen in "so-and-so"?

With the exception of the ending of the middle line, this is how each line starts, but you would need to use the scroll bar to read all of the middle line.
