Are you on the free version ?

The latest build is 4.8.1296 last updated 22nd. January and the dreadful GUI is still there.

Can you open anything from the pop-up menu by right clicking the systray icon ?

Do you have any of the following symptons.

Links in emails within Outlook Express will not connect.
WinXP Help and Support Centre fails to open
WinXP search fails to open from the start button, but will within explorer.exe
Help menus in installed applications fail to open.
emails in Outlook Express will not print
web pages will not print.

Have you done malware scans with other program, and/or have you done an on-line scan.

Hi,nothing seems to be amiss.Nothing has been picked up with sas, mbam and avast.Do you think im meant to have that cd console displayed as ive only used avast for a week.
The only probs ive had is when i had spyware doctor it kept sticking at the update box,it would dl but i couldnt open up the program.I had noticed a slightly longerstartup time, between the user account selection and the desktop appearing, but only about 10 seconds longer.
I.E takes longer to close now also,it takes 5 seconds to close the window, but i was mucking about with the setting before and maybe thats the reason.
I can easily reinstall avast or format my drive if theres a serious problem

cheers

I asked that string of questions as something similar happened to me a couple of years ago, and was sorted by a reinstall of Internet Explorer.
The same directX controls which function in my list and in Internet Explorer are the same directX controls that are use to open the avast GUI.............possibly you could check that all your directX and your Internet Explorer are up to date and not corrupted in some way.

Do you have an Avast desktop icon as well as the systray icon ?

How did you open the page you are displaying?
Did you open it from either the Desktop or the Start menu?

Or did you right click on the icon next to the clock?
Because what you are displaying is the scan result page.

Try the desktop or the start menu option first.

There's a link on the main menu where you can change to a more conventional looking skin. ;)

Hi guys, thanks for your input.I have reinstalled avast and the cd player comes on when i start the program.I think that an optimizer program may have edited or corrupted or deleted a file.Maybe i will delete the "advanced system care" program

> "advanced system care"

I take it that was the program you either think was the culprit because possibly you ran it just before Avast started to play up!

I also have a similar program called "Error Repair Professional"  that if not treated cautiously plays merry hell with Firefox, "it disables all the links until Firefox is reinstalled".

Yes Phil,i had all sorts of stuff, but its them 1 click optimizers that are risky, unless you know what every setting is for and adjust accordingly.I dont know much about direct-x,but ive seen them getting deleted by optimizers on my pc,so Tuftedduck was most probably right.

>>> i cant seem to bring up that stupid cd player type control panel.

Its not in the most logical of places

> Right click the icon in your sys tray
> 2nd Item down "Start Avast Antivirus".

Umm.. Yes I know Avast is already running! - hence why not logical. ???
