A New 2Wire 2700HGV With 5.29.117.6 Firmware
« on: September 05, 2011, 07:09:41 PM »

b*cat uses a 2Wire 2700HGV with the latest BT Firmware Version: 6.1.1.48.1-enh.tm for his normal Internet access. To ensure that it is not molested by the Evil Empire, the 2700HGV is blocked from "phoning home" to the provisioning server.

Due to inbuilt feline curiosity, I have further obtained a 2Wire 2701HGV-C (a.k.a. the Version 3.0 BT Business Hub) and a spare 2Wire 2700HGV (a.k.a. the Version 2.0 BT Business Hub) -- both factory brand new and sealed.

Imagine my delight when, having powered up the spare 2700HGV without it being connected to anything (other than its PSU  ), on eventually accessing the device via an Ethernet cable I discovered that it was loaded with BT Firmware Version: 5.29.117.6

So my current plan of action, when I have the odd spare moment, is to connect to that isolated 2700HGV and take a screenshot of every possible page that is accessible. I have made a start, have worked from http://home/xslt?PAGE=A00 to http://home/xslt?PAGE=A20

Any comments or other advice from other affectionados of the 2Wire devices so that I maximise the information thus obtained?

For those interested, I have now finished taking screenshots of every page with significant information. A zip file containing them is available for download --

http://elrepo.org/people/ajb/screenshots/2Wire_2700HGV_Firmware_Version_5.29.117.6_Screenshots.zip

This is my first experience of the 5.x.y.z version firmware on a 2700HGV and I was surprised at the difference from the 6.1.1.48.1-enh.tm version, with which I am familiar.

Before that brand new, unused, 2700HGV is connected to an ADSL line, I shall have to check for the recommended method to ensure that the "Evil Empire" does not remotely upgrade the firmware to the latest 6.u.v.w version.

Off I go to review a different section of the "master" website --

Firmware version 5.29.107.12 is safe from automatic upgrade. I've got a copy if you need it.

I also struck it lucky with an eBay purchase and have 5.29.107.12 :)

The Management and Diagnostic Console is very useful. Back using it after resolving my REIN issues discussed in another thread.

Thank you, Eric, a copy of that firmware image would certainly be appreciated. Perhaps you would send me a PM with regards to how we can exchange to file, please?

It's a bit big for an email attachment, so I'll upload it to a file sharing site and give you the details.

@Eric, I have now downloaded the image. Thank you. There is one thing I would like to check, please. In your earlier post you said --

However I see that the image I now possess is 5.29.107.19 . . .  ???

I do apologise b*cat. I can only put it down to a senior moment. I've got two 5.29.107.xxx firmwares, and I uploaded the wrong one. :-[

Here's the correct one:

http://www.storageserver.co.uk/files/2702/bt-2700hgv_reinstall_voice_adsl.5-29-107-12.2sp.html

I don't recall what the difference is (if any).

Thank you, Eric. Both images are now safely stored away. :)

The "new" 2700HGV will be flashed with the 5.29.107.12 firmware sometime tomorrow.

Hello everyone,

I found a second hand BT 2Wire 2700HGV for £4- I think that's a pretty good deal  :) It won't be useful once VDSL is installed, but no doubt it will be useful in the future, or with helping neighbours.

It's got the latest firmware: 6.1.1.48.1-enh.tm but I may well revert that. One noob question: how do I prevent it from contacting the mother ship?

I'm afraid that you can't with that firmware, and you can't revert to any 5.x.x.x firmware. As far as I know, the only alternative firmware is the Qwest version, details here: http://bt2700hgv.tripod.com/085.htm  This is OK, but doesn't have the diagnostic tools available in the BT firmware.

As there is 2700HGV with that version 6 firmware in regular use here at "The Cattery", I can help. Looking in my archived notes, I found the following --

Quote
Block BT Provisioning Server.
For V6 Firmware.

Setting > Broadband > Routing

IP:66.193.112.0 Subnet:255.255.254.0 Gateway:192.168.1.100
IP:64.186.176.0 Subnet:255.255.240.0 Gateway:192.168.1.100

After adding the above, the log should then subsequently show:

WRN date-time cwmd:httpc_poll_dispatch - Connection timed out
WRN date-time cwmd:session failed...

Hopefully that is quite straightforward but if you have problems, just ask. :)

Thanks b*cat- I found those two log entries after I blocked those IPs.

Out of interest, how did you figure out the IP addresses to use?
