The al-Qaeda leader was killed in a ground operation outside Islamabad based on US intelligence, the first lead for which emerged last August.

Few people will be sorry to see the back of him, but I'm not sure that the Americans should be crowing about killing him in a sovereign foreign country. As you say Adrian, violence tends to breed more violence, and there's bound to be a response from the terrorists, if only to demonstrate that they're still just as strong without him.

As it was the CIA that trained and payed Bin Laden in the first place I think the USA should be very quiet as they created a monster that they could not control when it turned on them ( and the rest of the world).

Obama made a huge blunder in his speech this morning, which will result, I fear, in a dreadful backlash from Islamic fundamentalists and an ensuing bloodbath

To quote Obama : -
" After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body. "

bin Laden was not killed in a firefight, and that one sentence may appear to imply that he was first captured and then killed.........I do hope that a clarification is issued.

Interesting that he was living in a $million mansion in a compound  (Rumoured to be purpose built about 10 years ago) just a few hundred meters from the Pakistan Military Academy.

... and how many years has he been assumed to be living in caves in the mountains?
