New Router?
« on: November 23, 2010, 06:39:31 PM »

I have just joined a new ISP and left O2 Access as they are shocking.

I want to eliminate the current problem of slow speeds/disconnections, by buying a new router. I currently have a Netgear DG834G that I bought second hand, so I kinda want a fresh start. Plus I can't tell if my Netgear is faulty or not. I tend to lose 1 bar of signal on my laptop when I'm sat in the same room with the router!!!

Is there a decent router I can buy new for around £25? Possibly N technology as apparently it's more reliable?

Thanks

Depends how technical you are. If reasonably so then buy a used ex-Sky DG834GT on fleabay for £20 or less and unlock/reflash it to standard.

I bought that a while ago....didn't like the fact I was using a Sky branded router! I want a new one too.

Anyway I can tell if my Netgear is faulty? Shouldn't lose one bar whilst in the same room according to windows should it?

If there's something wrong with your connection, changing to a different router won't fix it. Can I suggest (again) that you do a bit of diagnosis first, as suggested in your other thread http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,8352.msg173458.html#msg173458

Trust me, it's O2 Access.

Had similar problem with AOL, changed to ADSL24 from them, and all sorted straight away.
I want to leave O2 anyway as they slow speeds down. The Access package is terrible.

Is there a way I can test the Netgear for any problems?

The ISP isn't responsible for your connection speed going down. That's why I keep on trying to persuade you to provide some diagnostic data, starting with your connection stats. Then we'll be better able to help you.

Well when I am with my new ISP, at least they'll actually help me and not tell me to use a [*****] router that I can't connect my devices to.

ADSL24 are one of the best anyway. I used to be with them, and I'm pretty sure they'll help me if I get any probs.

Any advise on a router?

I'm thinking this one:

http://www.netgear.co.uk/dgn1000.php

It's N rather than G so should be better than my DG834G right?

Better for what?
It's the same frequencies as G so the same effective range.
Any G wireless router is going to be faster than your broadband, unless you're on Virgin 50mbps or faster.
And you'd need N-rated adapter in your laptop/PC of course.

So, if you want to move data quickly between local N-rated wireless PC's then yes it may be better.
Otherwise not.

N (vs G) is like Cat6 (vs Cat5e) - largely pointless.
Of course you could splash out some serious cash and get 802.11N 5GHz kit...... ???

Oh I thought you got better wireless coverage from an N router??

My laptops are N enabled.

What router would you advise then, and is there a way I can check my current Netgear to make sure it's working like it should?

Another thing...

My router is behind my tv unit at the mo as thats where the BT master socket is....also behind there with it is a subwoofer, and the phone handset dock.

Could these devices be disconnecting my router? Would it be best to have the router upstairs on it's own plugged into the bedroom socket?

At last you are getting the idea of trouble-shooting  :)

The location may well not be conducive to the good performance of a router.

Ok so my sync problems are sorted now so that's not the issue here.

My issue is I need router advise! I have heard that a router with a Broadcom chip is best for standard ADSL broadband that I have.

My current DG834G hasn't got that, and as I am far from the exchange, I figured one with a broadcom chip would be best.

Any ideas? Would prefer a Netgear.
