There is of course the addendum to the list posted by Dave:

"2 elderly forum members to reminisce about how much better the light bulbs were in the old days."

I donated a significant number of spare old-style 60W bulbs to an elderley neighbour - her light fittings just won't take any modern ones.

As for low-energy bulbs, we've been using them for years but I have my doubts....
First, they never have the claimed life and get noticeably poorer with age so we replace them more often than expected.
Second, they are very slow to "warm up" and give full brightness, so we tend to just leave them on. No more do we turn the light out when leaving a room.
Third, the claimed equivalent brightness never seems to actually be correct, so we always use at least one power level up.
Fourth. They often don't fit well, or at all, in your lights.
Fifth. You have lights on mostly in winter and they give off heat. So you need more heating to make up the deficit.
Sixth. Pollution from whatever is in them and the manufacturing process???????

I could go on, but I'm not that impressed.

Precisely!

So unless you live somewhere warm, meaning that you are not heating your house, then this doesn't even save you any energy as long as you have a thermostat on your heating system. It's complete nonsense for those of us who live in the far frozen north, who for three-quarters of the year are getting zero-cost heat from light bulbs, computers and everything else you care to think of!

That's joined-up thinking. You can't expect governments to be capable of such subtlety. :wall:

Reading that, I just realised that that is what I do too.   When in the PC room I often now leave the hall "energy saving" light on...
Because if I go downstairs by the time Ive reached 5th up from the bottom theres so little light I can hardly see where Im going if its only just been switched on... and by the time I reach the downstairs light its practically still dark.

Now I'd been doing that subconsciously without even really thinking about it.. I bet theres a hell of a lot more that do too.   Not really saving energy is it?

As I have said before:
They may be energy saving, but they are not money saving.
Especially in years to come when you will have to start paying to dump them.

Multiple sclerosis, childhood leukemia, diabetes... I don't know whether it's a scam or not, but they're certainly playing on people's fears in that advert. I wouldn't have anything to do with them personally.

They are  >:(

When I see something like that it gets my back up...  and turns me right off.
Making claims like that, makes one wonder what else they are 'exaggerating' on..  and I wouldnt trust them.
