Router Setup Advice
« on: May 25, 2010, 05:30:18 PM »

Ok, so I keep losing connection to my Netgear DG834G router, or it goes slow.

My master socket is behind my TV, so I have my router plugged into it, and stood on my tv cabinet behind my tv. I also have a cordless phone on the tv cabinet, along with all the usuals, Speakers, and Sky.

I am aware this is probably a bad place to put it, however, my PS3 is right there and I have it plugged into the router via ethernet.

Does this all seem ok, or is it the worst setup possible?!!

Only other choice I have is to plug the router into the upstairs phone socket, and have the router on the floor (on it's stand), however this means online gaming could be a problem as it's going wireless.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Jaydog,

I can't remember if you've gone through Kitz's list for making improvements (i.e. ringwires removed, modem directly into the master socket with a BT SSFP or possibly the ADSL Nation faceplate. You could also try a screened RJ11 Modem cable again from ADSL Nation.

I would then separate the cordless phone base station as far as possible away from the modem and its wires.

Kind regards,
Walter

Yeah I have removed the ringwire. Not bothered with a faceplate as it's far too complicated for me.

Do you think the router would be ok plugged into the socket upstairs then? Not able to move the phone anywhere else to be honest.

Re the Faceplate, it is a good idea to capture the ADSL signal at the earliest point you can and it would only mean putting the two extension wires in to the new faceplate before screwing it in.

The modem will probably work upstairs in an extension socket but you probably won't get quite as fast a connection.

Walter

I get no better sync than I do when I plug it into the test socket.

The main worry is whether where the router is, is causing problems?

G'Day Jaydog,

What version is the modem ie: v2, v3 etc. Also who is your ISP? It may be worth calling them and asking them to take a look for you.

V3. I am on O2.

The Netgear was something I bought myself so they offer no support.

I just want to know if it would be better upstairs on the non master socket compared to how I have it now.

Hi again Jaydog,

Nobody can give you an absolutely definitive answer to that question. I expect many here would say it's highly unlikely that you will improve matters by using an extension socket. At the very best it shouldn't be very much worse than in the master socket but you'd need to do the experiment to be sure. However if you're going to spend money on home plugs or ethernet cable I suggest you'd be better off trying a different modem, say a 2Wire HGV 2700.

Kind regards,
Walter

Thanks. It might be better being upstairs though as it's higher up with no electricals surrounding it?

Do you have any port forwarding rules set up?

If so dissable any loging on them.

As for right next to TV I don't think I would have it there.

V3. I am on O2.
If you are on the O2 "full" LLU service (ADSL2+) then that version is sub-optimal.
Only the DG834(G)v4 or DG834GT have the correct Broadcom chipset to work ideally with O2 and Be LLU services.
(as do several newer Netgear models and many Thomson ones)

Oh right, so you're saying I should use the wireless box II then?
I would but my PS3 doesn't get on with it.

V3 is fine for O2 Access, you're connected to BT kit.

Hi Jaydog,

My second posting here shows a significant improvement when the modem is in the test socket rather than upstairs.
