Trying to get the best possible out of my line.
« on: April 21, 2010, 07:09:27 PM »

I have just started by trying to get the best out of my phone line. (I live about 3-4 miles from the telephone exchange)
My router was syncing about about 2600-2700kbps.

I have now moved my router as close as possible to the master socket and plugged it into the test socket of my NTE5. My speed has instantly increased :)
Im just wondering if there is anything else I can do, my line attenuation is still quite high.

I have O2 Broadband and below are my stats.

Uptime:   0 days, 1:24:28

DSL Type:   G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   901 / 3,302

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]:   0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:   12.0 / 18.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:   34.5 / 62.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:   6.0 / 6.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote):   TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):   0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):   0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote):   0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote):   0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote):   5 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down):   59 / 10,092

CRC Errors (Up/Down):   59 / 316

HEC Errors (Up/Down):   272,741 / 309

Any ideas, or am I now as good as im going to get?

Hi Loomx and welcome,

You could try doing the 17070 option 2 quiet line test and if you can hear anything you can report a phone line fault to your phone provider. (Not a broadband fault.)

You should check your house wiring before putting the NTE5 together again.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

You could try running Routerstats Lite to see if there are any higher frequency noise problems detected by the modem.

Have you checked your modem has the latest firmware as that can occasionally help.

Perhaps some of the Gurus can offer a few more ideas?

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi
quote Im just wondering if there is anything else I can do, my line attenuation is still quite high.

quote I live about 3-4 miles from the telephone exchange This explains your attenuation

a 62db attenuation equates to about  4.5 Km

Quote Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   901 / 3,302 the Download speed is in fact very good  for this attenuation. (remembering to correct for ADSL2+)

see expected synch rate

so once you have sorted out your connection problems as per Walters Link  you should have a good stable line . :)

Regards Jeff

Move  ;D

The line attenuation is dertermined by how far you live from your exchange,so nothing you do inside your home will change that.

I too am with O2 LLU on a long line( longer than yours)You will see by my stats that my speed is not quite as good as yours. The speed you are are getting is very good for your attenuation.

I myself have my router plugged into the BT master socket,I don't have any other extensions/internal wiring
