Phishing: Spoof refund from HMRC
« on: January 20, 2010, 01:00:21 PM »

I just received an e-mail, allegedly, from HMRC inviting me to claim a tax refund:

However, it is a spoof as it links to http: //www .yanggeun .org - clearly NOT an HMRC domain.

It reads quite well, but don't be tempted and don't be fooled.

Text is:
=============

"Tax Refund Notification

After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity, we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of 988.50 GBP. Please submit the tax refund request and allow us 2-3 days in order to process it.

Click Here to submit you tax refund request

Note : A refund can be delayed a variety of reasons, for example submitting invalid records or applying after deadline.

Best Regards

HM Revenue & Customs"

Thanks for that. I hope you don't mind, but I've disabled the link address so someone doesn't accidentally click on it.

I've just had a similar spoof phishing email allegedly from HSBC Bank.  Looks very realistic and proper - except I don't bank with HSBC.  These emails do annoy me and must catch a few people out.  I've just forwarded mine to HSBC for them to open and look at. :)
