what can I expect

Hi everyone.

I am in the process of moving house and have just set up broadband in my new home/office. I know the line length to the exhange is quite long and I am not expecting lightning fast adsl, but after 1 week, I am still only syncing at 576bps

these are the dsl line stats from my zyxcel router

line attn of 57dB is quite high, but I would still hope to get speeds of at leat 2-3 times what I have at present.
Is it likely that my speeds ill increase over time, or do I need to start making a fuss immediately before the profile for my line is stuck firmly in the too slow to bother with bin?

any advice gratefully received.

Certainly you should be getting a faster speed than that. It's nothing to do with any initialisation period, because the router will always connect at the best speed it can, right from the start. And it's not to do with your IP profile, because this is controlled by your router's connection speed, not the other way about.

What seems to be the problem is that there's no bit loading above tone 100 or thereabouts, which suggests some considerable interference in the higher frequencies. To trace this, the first thing to do is to remove the master socket faceplate and connect the router to the test socket inside. This isolates all your internal extension wiring, so if the sync speed is still low you can be pretty sure that the problem is external.

I am connected to a filtered NTE5 adsl faceplate, would it make a difference if I plugged into the master socket via a microfilter?

No, if you've got a filtered faceplate then your extension wiring is already isolated in effect (assuming that it's not faulty of course).

So it looks as though the problem is external interference (or a telephone line or exchange issue). If you can hear any crackling or hissing on the telephone, report it to your phone provider who will test the line. If there isn't any extraneous noise, you could report it to your ISP, but they will certainly want you to carry out more tests, so it's worth gathering some information first. I suggest that you download and install Routerstats or more likely Routerstats-Lite which should work with your Zyxel router. This will monitor your noise margin over time, which will give clues as to what sort of interference or fault is causing the problem.

Thanks for the fast response.

I will download routerstats and routerstats lite and give them a go.

I have a DG834 running in my current office, do I might swap the routers over and see if it improves things

At least I should be able to run the full version on the dg834

thanks once again

Hi GreenMan,

1.  Do remeber that the V2 and V3 versions of the DG834 might still have the AR7 bug unless you've updated the firmware already.
You could also try the DGTeam firmware as that has additional features.

2.  As you may be about to embark on a lengthy performance investigation, might I suggest you would be wise to do as Roseway said and use the test socket with a different filter?
Doing so will eliminate any possible internal wiring problems as well as checking you have a good filter.

3.  If you can do the 17070 quiet line and ring-back tests whilst observing the modem statistics, you could see if using the phone has any affect on the broadband performance.

Kind regards,
Walter

I am running firmware     V3.01.31

as a quick test I have routerstats running on it now, and all seems OK.

I will swap the routers over next week and take a filter over as well, I will try the master socket as you suggest.

As this is a new connection, could I get BT to run some tests on the line as well, or would that be too simple?

I very much doubt that BT will be interested before your 10 day training period is completed.
Even then BT can sometimes be less enthusiastic than other more co-operative ISPs.

Also remember not to swop or re-boot modems very frequently and always remove the power before unplugging the RJ11 cable.

Kind regards,
Walter

>>> output power downstream: 16 db

That line isnt currently quite running at full power.

This is a long shot - but you say youre syncing @ 576 - is it always 576?
Whats your upstream speed?

OK, I,ve binned the zyxcel router. The user interface was just too flakey and when I tried it on my line here it just didn't seem as good as my old dg834.

I have got hold of a dg834 v4 and got that running in the new office and can monitor it with routerstats from here.

Here is the summary result so far.

Downstream
Noise Margin:     3.4   dB
Connection Rate:  1024  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 63.5  dB
Power:            16.8  dBm
Max Rate:         1184  Kbps

SF:               271222
SF Errors:        278
Reed Solomon:     4610782
RS Corrected:     164363
RS Un-Corrected:  1057
HEC:              241
Errored Seconds:  1069
Severe ES:        18

Interleave Depth: 4
Bitswaps:         0

Upstream
Noise Margin:     18.0  dB
Connection Rate:  448   Kbps
Line Attenuation: 31.5  dB
Power:            11.9  dBm
Max Rate:         932   Kbps

SF:               272344
SF Errors:        0
Reed Solomon:     2314924
RS Corrected:     0
RS Un-Corrected:  0
HEC:              0
Errored Seconds:  0
Severe ES:        0

Interleave Depth: 2
Bitswaps:         0

I have used router stats to lower the target snr to 3dB to get a speed increase, I will wait and see how stable it is.

I will also try plugging into the master socket on Monday, to see if that improves things
