Thanks Kate,

We always buy a tin at Christmas.

I think it is a known fact that the region in France where all they use is goose fat/duck fat, have one of the lowest heart disease rates in Europe. Please correct me if I'm wrong.  :)

Ah - another devotee of Jamie Oliver.
Sainsburys are stacked to the gunwhales with it.
And if you don't eat it, you can always spread it on your chest to get rid of a cold.

You are  quite correct Unc ... It's the Perigord  region       (Dordogne )  ....    not  too far from us   ....Goose fat is  high in  mono-unsaturated fats which can lower blood cholesterol level !

Peter   ..  I'm pleased that Jamie has finally caught up

Talking of fats, have you ever had fish and chips cooked in beef, the taste is superb.Far better than any kind of oil.Not very good for your health though.
We sometimes have roast potatoes done in beef dripping. Not as good as Goose fat,but still very tasty.  :)

If you are ever on the North Yorkshire coast, try the Magpie Cafe for Fish and chips, the best in Yorkshire.Always packed.

I'll second, third and fourth that.  ;D
We (extended family) stayed in a big house along the road to Sandsend for a weeks spring holiday a few years ago.
Managed to get into The Magpies for evening meal on 3 occasions having heard of it even "darn sarf". They actually let us book after the first visit (we queued of course) as there were a fair few of us, despite saying they don't take bookings (that may have changed).

I recall that the fish soup was, to quote Michael Winner, "Historic".

All Harry Ramsdens stores cook their fish & chips in beef dripping and their "standard" fish is haddock.  mmmmmmmmmmmm   :yum:

I prefer haddock to cod,has more flavour imo.  :yum:

Bread and dripping was a staple diet of poorer Sheffield families year ago. Many a working man would have taken bread spread with beef or usually pork dripping for their packing up with a bit of salt on.
My mum and dad use to talk about during the 2nd world war of having bread and lard.
