Constant disconnects
« on: October 13, 2009, 10:56:59 AM »

hi i joined o2 about 3 months ago since day 1 my connection keeps dropping 6-20 times a day, i must have phoned o2 20 times, i have had 3 new wireless boxes tried using a netgear  DG834G router and it still disconnects
I have had 5 openreach engineers at my home they have run all possible tests they say my line is fine
my router stats are

Current Training Status      : Showtime
Current trained adsl mode    : G.Dmt
Current trained adsl path    : Interleaved
Downstream Bit Rate          : 6784000 bps
Downstream Noise Margin      : 11.0 dB
Downstream Attenuation       : 20.0 dB
Upstream Bit Rate            : 448000 bps
Upstream Noise Margin        : 16 dB
Upstream Attenuation         : 39.0 dB

Openreach said they checked everything at the exchange and everything was fine, i have tried monitoring my router with router stats just before my connection drops my RX noise jumps from a steady 8 -11 db to 40+ db then i loose my connection and sync, after a few secs i get my connection back. Openreach fitted a special noise filter before my main BT box it made no difference
I have my router plugged in my test socket, tried fitting new adsl filter, tried using different cables openreach think my line is picking up interference from somewhere
O2 say there is nothing more they can do if i want another engineer i will have to pay £100+ so I’m stuck with this

Hello, stevenb9275
Was your connection OK before you joined O2?

Hi Stephen,

You haven't mentioned if you've done the 17070 quiet line test or whether you've checked Routerstats when making or answering a phone call.
Do you ever hear cross-talk when you are making a call?

Apart from those it does sound like the dreaded REIN so a log of times of the day of the drops, searching with an AM radio and a binocular inspection of BT lines if overhead are some of the few things left.

Looking at your figures they seem strange. You normally expect the upstream attenuation to be about half of the downstream. How far are you from your exchange by road distance? Do you get the same figures with a different modem?

Kind regards,
Walter

It looks as though the upstream and downstream attenuation figures were swapped in your first set of stats. There's nothing particularly unusual about the stats, although you might expect to get a little more speed. As has been said, it really does look like electrical impulse noise (REIN) and you can read about that here. The AM radio trick can be an effective way to track down REIN, but of course you do have to be doing the test when the interference occurs, which is why it's worth logging the times of day when it happens.

This all sounds very familiar. I have the same issue on my line at the moment and it could come down to REIN as the above post mentions.

Try the radio trick and then post your results.

The thing about that is that, although it's labelled Rx Noise, it's actually noise margin, and the noise margin doesn't leap up by 35 dB like that as a result of interference, it goes down. So that's a false report, and I don't really know what the explanation is. Perhaps there really was a noise spike and for some reason it was displayed wrongly. I think we really need to see more routerstats graphs with spikes.

That looks like a single negative noise spike below zero dB in an otherwise calm situation.
The question is what happened at about 20:44 this evening?
I.e. who turned what on or off at that time?

Carrying on with the questions:-

Is your house part of a larger community and how far away are other inhabitants?

Are there any other houses overlooking yours ?

Are you in a block of flats with lifts or sequenced lighting?

Is there any other plant in close proximity ?

Do your lights dip / flicker during one of these excursions?

Kind regards,
Walter

It seems u guys are right there must be a bug in the telnet part of router stats here is a few more screens shots from the none telnet part of router stats

I live in a small village with houses at the sides and infront of me, the houses at the sides are about 30ft away

There is a large sawmill about 1/2 a mile from my village its running 24/7

When my router discontects there is no flickering of my lights

I cant pinpoint the disconects to anything in my home, i can be home alone on my pc i dont switch anything on or off when it happens

Do they work over Christmas?

I know it is a not that close but a test when the plant is down would be good if  you still have the issues then.

Hi Steven,

But you don't get 24/7 disruptions.

I suggest you log a few days spikes including at least one week end. Then wander down to see the sawmill manager.
As well as actual plant such as cranes and hoists I suggest you ask if they use any Walkie Talkies or whether their trucks have CB Radios.
If so are they UK purchased and on what frequency do they operate ?

Kind regards,
Walter

I remeber once when I was using some test equipment and then used a radio the whole thing when mad.
