new router question
« on: August 10, 2009, 01:24:13 PM »

Hi

When I want to install another router do I have to do anything to remove the old one (apart from disconnecting it/) I might want to swap between the 2 for fault finding .
Regards Jeff

No, you can just leave the present one with its settings as they are, and you can put it back at any time. You should reboot any PCs which are connected to the router every time you swap it.

But do remember to drink plenty of tea inbetween the swops.

Also be careful to check the power supply voltages. Many routers use the same plug but operate on different voltages.
E.g, Netgear & Linksys @ 12 Volts, 2Wire @ 5.1 Volts, ADSL Nation X_Modem @ 9 V, Thompson 585 V7 @ 22 V
However ALWAYS check your own modems yourself !

Kind regards,
Walter

Yes, and those two routers use the same 12V dc power supply (although Walter's advice to check is good). Just disconnect the leads from the old router, connect them to the new router and switch it on. Leave it a minute or so, then (re)boot the PC, open a browser and log into the new router. The only setting up you'll need to do (probably) is entering your ISP login name and password.

ZEN help still want me to try another router ?.

When I had the new D Link I have before I put the latest ADSL drivers on it it often dropped PPP sessions. Could be Firmware related? Trying a different router is your best bet though :)
