Hi new to this forum but not the problem,  Can you tell me what they did, I would love to know so I can hound them, as I am having exactly the same issue.  I should be getting 7MBPS but my ip profile is 500kbps.  BT were very unhelpful even after emailing CEO of retail.  Sent out engineer, said that I am getting 7mbps, plugged himself into my router only 500kbps.  Said it was faulty router, gave me a new one.  no good at all.  Got frustrated and left them for virgin, big mistake!!! same issues.

Hi,
Well there was 2 things that the engineer did.

1. I live in a flat and have 4 extention sockets and the main one. I only needed the main one and 1 additional socket so he disconnected the other ones as he said the internal wiring was a bit dodgy and that internal sockets/wiring can effect the speed the line is capable of. The flat l live it has had quite a few problems some of them very fundamental and when l first moved in the internal extension sockets didn't work with the phone so l had them 'fix' them. I think the builders were useless. Usually this would be an additional charge as BT are only responsible for the main socket but he said he wouldn't charge me.

2. He discovered that some of the wiring in the main socket was tied to the socket screws!! For some strange reason! So he rewired the main socket.

Both those things have helped hugely and although my speeds aren't amazing (1.2mbps) they are tons better than the 0.2 to 0.5mbps l was getting before.

Hope that helps.

I have attached a picture which shows my stats a bit better, please the stats from BT speedtester.

I have had an engineer out stating that I have 7mb coming through the socket but as soon as he went through the router, all was bad.  I am now connected through the test socket and have only one phone working.  It is an old dial phone revamped for modern useage.

The Performance Tester is now testing Broadband connection. Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 500 k
Please do not move away from this page and do not start any other download activity on your computer.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 7680 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 458 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

It looks as though you have perfectly good router stats but you are simply limited by the IP profile. The IP profile should correct itself automatically within a few days, but if it's been like this for more than 5 days then you may have a stuck IP profile. In the latter case, your ISP can get it unstuck (assuming that they understand what this means :( )
