Fast DSL Connection but slow IP Profile
« on: June 02, 2009, 07:11:18 PM »

Hi,
Just wondered if anyone can shed any light on why my DSL connection rate would be at 1568kbps but my IP Profile is 250kbps??

I have been having really slow speeds for the last few weeks so l got a BT engineer round. He managed to get the DSL connection rate up from about 250kbps to 1568kbps so l thought all was good. Then after he left the internet still seemed slow so l did a BT speed test and found that l was only getting 250kbps on the IP Profile which l assume is why my broadband is slow.

I have plugged my router (BT Homehub) into the master socket (with the front panel off to bypass extensions) and the Profile and connection rate are still the same. So l presume that means that no internal wiring will be having an effect.

The engineer did say that the local 'internet box outside' (can't remember the exact term, those big green metal things) was getting 3mbps so l should be getting a decent speed.

All the engineer did when he was fixing it was re-wire the main socket and fully disconnect the internal phone extensions except for 1 that l need.

I am worried about getting another engineer out incase they end up charging me which is why l though l'd try and find out the reason for this issue here first.

Thanks for your time.

Hi and welcome to the Forum :)

Post up your stats and we will have a look at those for you.

As for your IP profile, it can take up to 5days from your last resync (reboot), when did you last connect up?

You are using the test socket so that rules out any internal issues.

Cheers

Hi  ;D thanks for the quick reply. I had heard this is a good forum.

Last reboot was a couple of hours ago. Engineer was here yesterday at 5pm so it's only be just over a day since he fiddled with the socket.

Here's my stats sorry for not posting them before:

Hi
with your attenuation I would expect about 3424Kbps on DSLmax this ties up with quote The engineer did say that the local 'internet box outside' (can't remember the exact term, those big green metal things) was getting 3mbps

edited out  some text

your profile will catch up .However 1,568 is not a valid synch speed ?? edit oops ?? used wrong calculator
Are you on a fixed rate ?

Thanks for the reply, very interesting about the attenuation.

See this link might help with trouble shoot.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm.

I am testing using the test socket so this shouldn't be an issue (should it?)

What do you mean by not a valid sync speed?

Are you on a fixed rate ?

Do you mean my broadband package? I am on Option 1 with BT. It says: "up to 8Mb download speeds as standard".

You have a number of "problems" that will take time to resolve, so be patient:
You've had some problems, the engineer hopefully has fixed them but the "fallout" is still evident.
Firstly the "IP Profile" is set very low; this should recover to something just below your sync speed in a few days (typically 3) and your throughput will increase accordingly.
Secondly the target SNR margin is set very high (looks like 15dB). This will reduce over time to normal (6dB) provided you have no more problems and your sync speed will increase in stages to around 3mbps (as will the IP Profile). The bad news is that this process can (will) take weeks or even months.

Hi and welcome :)

As mentioned by the others, this may take a short while to recover.

Your IP profile should do within a few days.. in fact for a jump for 250 to a 1568 sync I would have expected that to have happened today or tomorrow... sometimes it does take a little longer and depends on how busy the system is.

The other problem of the 1568 speed when you should be getting more is purely down to the fact that your SNR Margin is at 15dB. If your line remains stable, hopefully in about 2 weeks it will drop to 12dB, which should give you approx another 800 kbps... then another 2 weeks later drop again, giving you a bit more speed etc etc.

However, as you can now imagine this could take a while before your line recovers to its full potential.....
What you could try is approaching your ISP and see if they are prepared to help you speed things up a little.

Its worth contacting them and saying that you recently had a fault on your line which has now been corrected by an Openreach engineer.
However.. whilst the fault was in evidence this increased your Target SNR to 15dB, which is now obviously affecting the maximum speed at which you can sync at.  Would they kindly be prepared to get BT Wholesale to reduce your Target SNR to say 9dB, or alternatively back to the default and/or retrain your line.

Some ISPs are more receptive than others to this type of request.. unfortunately BT Broadband isnt one, but you may fall lucky and be able to get them to do this.  If it helps use the terminology (or copy) Ive used in the paragraph above.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your really helpful posts. If l have the will to give BT a call l will do and let you know how it goes. I will wait to see what happens with my line and keep you posted.

BT Speedtester results:

Your DSL connection rate: 1536 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 250 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 208 kbps

Here is my current DSL connection info:

Uptime:   0 days, 2:39:26
Modulation:   G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   448 / 1,536
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]:   4.84 / 25.87
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:   11.5 / 15.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:   31.5 / 56.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:   19.0 / 16.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote):   TMMB / ALCB
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):   0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):   0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote):   0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote):   0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote):   0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down):   0 / 0
CRC Errors (Up/Down):   0 / 6
HEC Errors (Up/Down):   0 / 4
Line Profile:   Fast

Strange that the SN Margin has now risen to 16.0.

Should the IP profile slowly rise over the next days/weeks/months or will it jump up? There has been no rise so far.

Thanks for that information, you were right it has now jumped up to 1250kbps!!  ;D

After 2 years of me trying to get BT to fix my broadband speed (usually only getting speeds of 200-500kbps!!) they finally sent out an engineer and fixed it!! (now you see my issue with patience! lol  ;))

Hopefully the speed will increase more but l am just amazed at how fast it now is, web pages actually load with little or no wait!

Thanks for everyones help on here, great forum.

That looks encouraging. You still have a high target noise margin as a result of earlier problems, and this is depressing your speed quite a lot below what it ought to be capable of. With a fair wind this should reduce over a period of several weeks, with a corresponding increase in connection speed. I suggest that you leave the router connected continuously and don't force any re-syncs, to give the automatic process the best chance of doing its job.

Ah ok, thanks for that I will keep it on. I thought you had to keep power cycling it to get the speed changes to take effect.

No, the more often you re-sync or power cycle, the more the system will see your connection as unstable. The process which automatically reduces the target noise margin needs to see a stable connection with low error rates for at least two weeks, for each 3 dB reduction in the target.

Hi new to this forum but not the problem,  Can you tell me what they did, I would love to know so I can hound them, as I am having exactly the same issue.  I should be getting 7MBPS but my ip profile is 500kbps.  BT were very unhelpful even after emailing CEO of retail.  Sent out engineer, said that I am getting 7mbps, plugged himself into my router only 500kbps.  Said it was faulty router, gave me a new one.  no good at all.  Got frustrated and left them for virgin, big mistake!!! same issues.
