AOL Cold-Calls
« on: August 31, 2010, 12:39:48 PM »

If you are an existing AOL customer you may be getting cold-called regarding a free upgrade to the UP TO 24 Meg service and a promise of increased speeds.

Please be very wary of this.

I am on a long line and can connect at sync speed of around 3776 Kbps.

The sales patter talks of an upgrade to the fibre optic network.

I know that AOL are NOT bringing this to my door and they admitted this after a few minutes.

They just want you to transfer to the LLU service.

When I told them that their own checker said my maximum speed on LLU would be 1.9 meg, they realised they were beaten.

AOL technical help (and BT) say all I can get right now is 1.5 meg !

They did offer a slightly better call package as I already have AOL Talk

If you want the call package and fancy paying your line rental to AOL rather than BT I am sure you could get a pretty good deal if, like me, you are a loyal customer of many years.

In defence of AOL, I have been with them since 1997, their dial-up service was fine, my initial fixed speed broadband at 0.5 meg was stable and reliable and since my switch to ADSL MAX the only problems have been during their network upgrades.

It might also be wise to check if your PCP is about to get FTTC and whether AOL will provide such a service for you.

Got the call on... 1st April 2010 | April Fools Day   ???

Yep!
The AOL fella couldn't even tell me what speeds I could expect to see    ::)
Turns out that I'm just about close enough to the exchange to see a difference... 2.5km
Before.... Approx 6.50mbps | After.... Approx 9.50mbps
Today's Router Stats
Attenuation... Down = 34.5 | Up = 17.1
Sync... Down = 12610 | Up = 1020

The AOL man that called me... Didn't Mention FTTC
However...
My area is due to have FTTC by December this year.

I've always been on... AOL LLU  ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I am on the TROON exchange (WSTRO)

WBC  from BT planned for March 2011.

FTTC, no date given.

Not sure what AOL have in the exchange now but with these stats , 9 dB noise margin and attenuation reported as 61 dB I am pretty happy with today's sync speed of 3872 kbps.

Any idea if there would be an improvement if I went to LLU ?

Hi Martswain,

Given that you are already significantly faster than Kitz's estimator

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php

I suggest it's highly improbable that you will better your current speeds if the attenuation figure is accurately reflecting your line distance from your exchange.

You might just like to confirm your line distance estimates here in case your modem is inaccurate:-

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php

EDIT to add:-

It's not impossible that you are already on a LLU connection with AOL / CarPhoneWarehouse

Can you tell us what ADSL type or Standard you see on your router page e.g. G.992.1, 2 or 5

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi Walter,

Modulation is reported as G.DMT which I believe is G.992.1

The checker gives 3.38 km by road, but I know from a local BT engineer it DOES NOT take the shortest possible road route.

Hi Martswain,

It looks as if you are still on the BT service.
If you enter your statistics here:-

http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx

you'll see you have a fine connection.
I suggest letting sleeping dogs alone !

Kind regards,
Walter
