I think he probably means a warm cuppa rather than a hot one - you know when you leave it for a while and it's just on the verge of becoming too cold to drink - I like my cuppa nice and hot too.

I have noticed Netgear routers can sometimes get a bit warm, but you are doing exactly the right thing keeping it vertical and on its feet in a ventilated area.  You shouldn't have any problems.

Sorry I didnt explain the Ezzers cup of coffee test very well.

His rule of thumb is compare it to a cup of coffee and it it was too hot would you drink it.

Ezzers cup of coffee test.

Quote
my general rule of thumb, place your palm on the router, if it's a bit warm- thats normal. If the heat is on the verge of: If it were a cup of tea or coffee at that temperature, could you drink it ?

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to buying the Netgear DG834Gv4.

Can I be certain the v4 is what will be delivered............What exactly is wrong with the v5 as I see people saying stay clear of it.

The DG834v4 (as does the DG834GT) contains a Broadcom chipset which are very good at coping with long lines.

It can be a bit pot luck if you get a v4 or a v5 from some retailers.  Theres a link somewhere recently (in TDs thread?) to somewhere that ensures you get a v4.

I bought mine from ebuyer http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=1&&store=8&cat=39&mfr=112

There is nothing on the site to indicate version number...........but if you stick with the ebuyer product code 52244 you should get the same kit as I did........and that is version four.

Maybe not the cheapest source, but I have come to trust ebuyer and am happy to pay their prices..... :)

ps...........a call to them might help.........Product advice and Telephone order: 0872 111 22 22 line are open Monday - Friday 9am - 7pm (excluding Bank Holidays).

Forgot to mention - an added bonus of the Netgear DG834Gv4 and the DG834GT is that because it is a broadcom chipset then it works with DMTtool and routerstats.  Both of these are invaluable tools for adsl diagnostics.

The v5 has a conexant chipset.

... The v5 has a conexant chipset.

The chip was tested and is not all that stable, hence people have been advising others to steer clear of it.
