playing CSS lags the router <WTF!?>
« on: March 09, 2009, 01:29:33 AM »

OK, some may not belive me but this is realy happening ;o

To the point. I am on a wireless network.
I have had some ping issues for a while now, searching for the cause i finally did this:
I connected my PC and my laptop to the wireless lan.
I set up a continous ping on my laptop
I tested various things on my pc.

Now, as soon as I join a server the ping to router gets from 1-2ms to 200-3000 ms. It stays like this for some time and than its 20-30ms for few seconds than 200-3000 again and so on.
As soon as i hit the disconnect button the ping gets back to normal 1-2 ms.

I have no freakin idea what is happening. I am using a BTVOYAGER router.
Thanks a lot for any answers/suggestions.
I have already checked for any malicious software and installed netlimiter to check my bandwich alocation.

It's almost certainly completely unimportant. Some routers (and many internet servers) prioritise throughput over the ICMP ping response. So when you are connected to a server the traffic going through your router gets priority and the ping response has to wait. You can check this by doing a tracert to the server you're connected to, e.g. "tracert bbc.co.uk" and what you'll probably see is a slow first hop to the router, but normal values to the external sites. The only figure which matters is the final one.

Just to show an example of what roseway is meaning...

Code: [Select]
C:\Program Files\Support Tools>tracert jolt.co.uk

Tracing route to jolt.co.uk [84.234.17.86]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    71 ms    99 ms    99 ms  Router [192.168.1.254]
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3    15 ms    15 ms    15 ms  10.1.2.1
  4    14 ms    15 ms    15 ms  195.66.225.18
  5    16 ms    16 ms    15 ms  bruce.ferrago.net [84.234.17.86]

Trace complete.

The high 1st hop at my router just means that my own router is prioritising traffic above ICMP type traffic.
The 2nd hop doesnt respond at all since it totally dis-regards ICMP ping in favour of network traffic.
However you can see that when traffic gets to hop 3 onwards, the time is still very good and it is the final time which matters.

I would not bother posting if it was what you ment.
I am having LAGS in CS, but not in f.e. warcraft 3; Also the webbrowsing goes down to some uberslow rates while playing. Taking into account that cs uses some 10 kbit of transfer this IS important and significant :)
The points where i do not lag in cs corelate to the points of low ping.

Can I suggest that you try connecting hardwired to the router and seeing if that improves things.

Not an option - sorry. I a, having generalised connection problems as well, when it would suddenly disconnect me from wireless. :(

Well as I was hinting at your latency issues may be related to your wireless network rather than your ADSL connection.  It would be useful if you could temporarily take your laptop and plug it in to the router to test.
