Why can't I buy electrical cable by the yard?
« on: February 17, 2009, 01:39:57 PM »

Went out this morning to buy 2 metres of 2-core electrical flex, everywhere I went they only sold it in a pack minimum 5 metres! When asked why one assistant said it was something to do with Trading Standards, you either buy a drum of 25 or 50 metres or it comes pre-packed.

Has the world gone mad?

I'm sure my local DIY shop will sell you any length you want from a reel.

The last time I looked, you could buy it in any cut length from Wickes, but that would have been some time ago. I can't see how it's anything to do with Trading Standards, unless there's some peculiar electrical safety regulation which our masters have decided in their undoubted wisdom to inflict on us.

I went to Wickes, Focus, Homebase and B&Q and none did cut cable by the metre, I guess one of the electrical wholesalers where electricians go might do but even there I suspect not because they dont want to be left with less than full reels which is what most sparks would buy.

Just look in the yellow pages for electrical suppliers.

You can always buy the 5 metres and save the spare for another time.I don't know the cost of 5 metres from a DIY store compared to 2 metres from an electrical wholesaler,it might be minimum.

We have 3 B&Q Warehouse stores within 15 miles and they all do cable by the metre, cut from the reel.  BUT, it is so expensive, it is sometimes cheaper to buy a whole reel and put the remainder in the 7 year box in the garage/shed!   ???

More like something to do with some daft EU directive.

Any decent Electrical Wholesalers will do Cable by the Metre, even the small independents.

You might struggle on T&E, but most Sparkies will only need a couple of metres of flex every now & then, unless they are doing a lot of House bashing.

Don`t know where you`re located, but the link below will give an idea, don`t forget prices are +VAT.
