evening all, today I had to reformat all of my Hard disk due to virus related issue
and I was wandering is there a way I could recover a few desperately needed files from it or am will I need to re-do a lot of "work"

There are some eye-wateringly expensive data recovery services which you could use, but apart from that I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope I'm afraid.

Now I have learned that not to back-up files is a terrible mistake in itself

You could try either of these freebies:

(ignore the bit about it being a time limited offer - it is 100% freeware)
Recuva

also consider using a separate drive for storing all your important files... covered in my tutorial

Although not a free program, ZAR (Zero Recovery Assumption) is most definitely the best program I have ever used since it was recommended to me.
Current version is 8.3.

Thanks for that I recovered most of my work from the programs and I now have a 1TeraByte Ext. HDD with all my work stored and some other stuff. 90quid well spent if you ask me
