Weird Openreach FTTP disconnect
« on: May 16, 2024, 02:31:48 PM »

Openreach FTTP via Gamma Business:

Code: [Select]
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 kern.info kernel: [446805.210436] mtk_soc_eth 15100000.ethernet eth0: Link is Down
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 daemon.notice netifd: Network device 'eth0' link is down
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 daemon.notice netifd: Interface 'wan' has link connectivity loss
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 daemon.info pppd[30537]: Terminating on signal 15
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 daemon.info pppd[30537]: Connect time 4584.9 minutes.
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 daemon.info pppd[30537]: Sent 780574922 bytes, received 2529894127 bytes.
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 daemon.info avahi-daemon[6252]: Interface pppoe-wan.IPv4 no longer relevant for mDNS.
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 daemon.info avahi-daemon[6252]: Leaving mDNS multicast group on interface pppoe-wan.IPv4 with address x.x.x.x.
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 daemon.notice netifd: Network device 'pppoe-wan' link is down
Thu May 16 14:05:23 2024 daemon.info avahi-daemon[6252]: Withdrawing address record for x.x.x.x on pppoe-wan.
If I'm reading that correctly, signal 15 has been sent from the far end for my PPPoE session to disconnect?

Can only get back by rebooting router, tried three different ones so far.

Pretty sure that is pppd being killed (SIGTERM) due to eth0 dropping.

I wonder if this is a fault with the ONT rather than the router?

Have you tried changing the ethernet cable between the ONT and router?

Yes I have, Gamma have booked an SFI for tomorrow morning, service was installed November 2021, Nokia ONT, has been on permanently since so, 30 month shelf life to cook the ONT?

Could be a bad PSU causing instability, or bad location cooking the capacitors in the ONT if it gets any direct sunlight?  It just plain random fault.

It doesn't really tell much from the router log as if ppp stops responding I believe the port its bound to may get reset, thus causing a link is down.

Openreach Engineer turned up this morning, confirmed I'm the only FTTP connection on my Telegraph Pole, I have the CBT to myself!  ;D

Replaced the Nokia 1GB ONT with a Nokia 2.5GB ONT.
Confirmed there was a ONT firmware update recently that had taken out a batch of Nokia 1GB ONT that required hard resets.

External wall, under a window sill, not in direct sunlight, away from radiator.
It's possibly a firmware fault that is intermittent enough that it's not seen.

Interesting news about the Nokia Firmware!
With Ind Net firms have issues occasional, me thinks this is something that needs to be addressed?

Firmware problems happen, dealt with a few :)

This sounds very similar to one we had where the ONT randomly rebooted. In our case just pushed out a new one and that resolved it

Is the ethernet link stable now?  Was quite an observant catch by Alex. :)

Hopefully I also keep my GPON to myself as well.

[   12.280157] mtk_soc_eth 1b100000.ethernet eth0: Link is Up - 2.5Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx

Link is up at the full 2.5Gbps the ONT can offer

How much bigger is the 2.5G ONT to the 1G?
The BT was quiet a small unit for indoors.

Identical size, fitted on the same backplate, still working fine.

Nice to know, mine is slotted over the blanking plate as well. :)

Mine is precariously screwed into the plaster as the engineer couldn't be bothered to plug the wall.

Should a heavy downpour cause a PPP authentication disconnect?
